Try holding the knifes the other end.
:giggles: Sorry, it's probably a repetitive strain injury. You don't have to have been doing more than usual, it can be a gradual thing. Try warming your hands up before you start buy stretching your muscles in the hands.
One day, when he was naughty, Mr Bunnsy looked over the hedge into Farmer freds field and it was full of lettuces. Mr Bunnsy, however, was not full of lettuces. This did not seem fair.

Few people seem to know that a great deal of repetitive stress injuries are caused or exacerbated during sleep. I work with my hands and also work out in martial arts every day; additionally, I enjoy tournament level waterskiing throughout the summer months. All of these activities put serious strain on the tendons that run through the carpal tunnel in my wrists, and over time I have experienced various repetitive stress symptoms.
Some years ago I learned that I had a tendency to sleep with my wrists curled in a manner that increased the alreay excessive wear and tear on my wrists and hands. That's six to eight hours of additional strain each night! After some experimentation I discovered a pair of simple semi-soft wrist braces that I could wear while sleeping; a month or so of this completely eliminated the problem and "trained" my hands to find comfortable, relaxed positions while sleeping. I've kept the supports and, in the last few years have used them occasionally when I knew I had experienced added wrist strain - after a few days of cabin remodeling, for example. Beyond any doubt in my mind, this is the best single remedy for repetitive stess injury ot the wrist. If you wait until the traditional surgical treatments would be warranted it will be way, way too late. Regards, Thomas Wayne

Heh, I was going to ask this sooner or later. I have been getting lots of wrist pain, seemingly came about when I started practicing the pass for hours a day. Taking a few days off didn't seem to help to much. However in the last couple of weeks I put the cards down, and starting working with coins, and the pain has gone away. So I'd suggest taking a break from what you are doing, and do something else. I also had my wrists massaged by a profsional massuse. This was a rather uncomfortable thing to have done, but almost instantly the inflamation goes away. I think I will try what Thomas suggested and go get some wrist braces to sleep in.

Well, if you are really working your sleights hard, ice for 15 minutes when you are done. If college athletics taught me one thing it was about muscle recovery.
I would work on false shuffles for literally hours. You can imagine the hand cramps I got. Icing my hands, just like I would a leg, actually helped a bit. Just a thought... |

You may want to check with a doctor, what you might just think is overuse and hand cramps may be something more seroius. repetitive stress/carpel tunnel is very common for people who use thier hands/wrists a lot (like hairdressers, typers, etc.) I'm sure working with the cards could also classify.

Ok this might or might not at all go to this topic but in Peter Marveys Bio on his page he says he finger practices. What does thet mean, massage ,warm up, or finger out the tricks he performs?

Sounds like early carpal tunnel syndrome to me. I'd go see a doctor, pronto! This is not something to fool with.
But on the more direct subject of "hand pain" after practice or performance - unless you are doing "palms of steel" type stuff, you should be very RELAXED when you handle the cards. Watch some of the old performers (Cardini comes to mind) - they treat the cards like they are made of tissue-paper. If you are getting sore, you are not "doing it right". Relax your grip, hold the cards gently. |

I agree with bdormer... relax your grip...
I was never good with card stuff and then I started holding the deck like a Faberage' egg... and sure enough, I've been getting really good with the cards.... and I had hand pain as well, that sure enough went away... but you might want to see a doctor, because a bum hand can't earn with magic!
