Houdini did an underwater straitjacket escape in either the Hippodrome or Hammerstein's pool, and I believe it was before 1919. It's mentioned in either Silverman or Kalush. I'll try to dig it out.

John;
Thanks. The ad we have is from 1919. Al Brandon, Joan Brandon's father, could have done it before 1919, but that is the furthest back date we have as displayed on our JoanBrandon.com website. D and D

Houdini: First In Flight?
NOT! Houdini was NOT the first person to fly a plane in Australia. This is a common misconception. Mostly because the Houdini publicity machine never denied it but never confirming it either. Why ruin the free publicity. 2 powered flights actually happened before Houdini made his flight. Check this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Houdi......_pioneer |

The Wright Brothers flew the first heavier than air craft in 1903. It is true that Colin de Fries (or Ralph Banks, I've heard both names) flew a Wright plane, in a straight line, at a low level, further than the Wright Brothers first flight in Dec 1903. He crashed on his second attempt at flight.
By that time, there was criteria to determine a successful flight. The main was control. The plane had to manuever, fly a figure 8 pattern and succesfully land. The story that Custance made a succesful flight in a Bleriot a day or two before Houdini's first flight in Melbourne HAS BEEN COMPLETELY DEBUNKED! They couldn't get the plane in the air, so, the backer made up a story and planted it that Custance had circled a pasture three times in the pre-gawn with a couple of neighbors who could only hear most of the flight -- except, it never happened. The first successful airplane flight on the continent of Australia was flown by Harry Houdini. |

There’s a quiet interesting discussion at
http://old.qi.com/talk/viewtopic.php?p=4......+defries exert below, Houdini's flight was on March 18th 1910.http://www.ctie.monash.edu.au/hargrave/houdini_bio.html However, there are two people who can claim to have beaten him. Colin DeFries who may have flown a heavier than air machine at the Victoria Park Racecourse in Sydney on Dec 9th 1909. However, some people claim that he didn't actually leave the ground. http://www.ctie.monash.edu.au/hargrave/b......#defries The second is George Augustine Taylor who apparantly got it up on Dec 5th 1909. http://www.ctie.monash.edu.au/hargrave/taylor_bio.html ............................................. I also found it interesting that one author (Hans Mof) cites the Wright brothers as not the first to fly but again the handling of the craft is an issue. To me, flying means getting off the ground and hanging there in opposition to gravity. Go De Fries

What happened on Wikipedia is there is an ongoing ****ing match over which region in Australia can celebrate the first airplane flight, and that regional fight made it to Wikipedia. I tried to rewrite the section with a reference to Defries claim, because I do think that is part of the story. But it was reverted by the same Defries-fixated user (who was also personally insulting), so I threw up my hands and I don't try to correct the Houdini Wiki page anymore. It's a mess. Lots of confused info there. |

The plaque at Digger's rest says it was Houdini and the Perth mint struck a coin for it.

I forgot not to trust Wikipedia .... I should know better! I once made the point that you couldn't trust it to my students by editing a page to say that Madam Curie won the Nobel prize and also invented the beef burger. I changed it back after .... but I was miffed at my students just relying on Wikipedia. Now I went and not only relied on it but relied on it second hand ......
Something that is so easy to change with NO REAL evidence needed cant be reliable. I must put a page up for me .... and come up with some truly unbelievable lies...... small pen-is no staying power cant get out of the front door in the morning uses gaffed handcuffs that kind of thing.... |
