Some performers like their coins really shiny. Take a look at the method this guy uses to get a mirror finish on half dollars:

Although the end result is, well, very polished, I doubt many magicians would use them as their go-to coins. It's hard enough not to flash a sliver of silver, I don't want my coins to glow in the dark!
Of course, this is just my personal pov. |

Great video! Thanks for sharing that with us. This would be excellent for the Miser's Dream where you want the coins to show up at a distance.

I'm doing it - I guess I'm one of those odd balls that like using shiny coins especially when using silks. Very dramatic when they vanish and reappear.

Shiny over dull for me, any day of the week. We all have different preferences though.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I like my silver nice and shiny and my copper dark and not shiny.

All depends what you are using them for. Misers dream would be one effect where you want them to show up but for anything else I prefer them to look natural. Especially if you are supposed to be using normal coins.

I love having this is the type of information tucked away in the back of my mind! I think I'll polish my wedding ring this afternoon

I stopped watching the original posted video when he suggested using Mother's mag and Aluminum Polish. Yes, you would not want to use that on valuable, collectible coins. But, it's not necessary to use it on any silver or other copper coins at any rate. An acceptable polish can be realized on brass or copper props--coins included--using Brasso and hand rubbing. For sterling silver, sandwiched, or nickel coins, all that is needed is a small buffing wheel, jeweler's rouge, and hand rubbing. Leave the plastic brush out of the equation.

While admittedly, those are the shiniest coins I've ever seen, I guess for me it really doesn't matter how they look as long as the set I use all look the same. I prefer worn coins to begin with but just as regularly use newer coins. My focus is more so on how specs see things and what they respond to. So, it think that if I had these really shiny coins, they would play about the same way as the other coins, as to the magic. Wouldn't mind having a few of them but wouldn't want to do the work for them.

Great points MB. Many of the available Jumbo coins (3" and larger) have a very shiny finish, so I like to match them with similarly shiny half dollars when I use the Jumbos for the finale'. I think it is important for continuity of appearance. I'm not aware of a good process to age jumbo coins, so the only option is to have shiny half dollars.
