I visit Penguin Magic every now and then. A few days ago I noticed Curtis Kam will lecture this Sunday. It's always exciting to see a coin guy presenting and so I thought I would bring it to the attention of the forum. I can't wait to see the lecture.

Oooh, very nice looking out mate! Think Ill have to get this one, if I am able... Were you able to see what topics may be discussed? Im very much into Mr Kam's okito box work. Beautiful flourishy (may have just created a word there... ;-) handlings, and you can tell how much time he has most likely put into just playing w/ the box itself ! I have enjoyed all of the other routines I have seen from Curtis as
well, so I'm sure this would be excellent..regardless of its contents! Thanks, - Richie Larson |

From the penguin webpage:
Curtis Kam will present a lecture specifically created for this event, designed to deliver the two things you want from the Big Kahuna of the secret tribe of coin warriors; equal parts of Inspiration & Information. For inspiration, he will perform classics from his nearly famous Coin Act including The Goblet, Coercive Purse 2.0, and Six Cylinder. Also, he'll perform and teach: Hang Loose Coins: The “slack key” fingering for David Roth's famous Hanging Coins that just about anyone can do. All you need is two hands and the ability to lie with them. Because the method is based on a twisted application of finger palm, the angles are no sweat. Kamnibal Cards: Thirty years ago, Curtis discovered a sure-fire killer closer for any close up set, living deep within every deck of cards. This major upgrade of the Cannibal Cards is funny and surprising, all wrapped up in a deep and satisfying mystery. Reach: Extending the grasp of the Bob Farmer/Derek Dingle trick you know as the “Little Hand”, Curtis makes the creepy, funny effect happen on the spectator's hand. Or, if you want, the little hand can reach out of your phone. XSPELL: Most versions of Dai Vernon's Spellbound don't have an ending, they just stop. This one builds to a strong and definite climax that has stunned even the experienced coin masters at the European Coin Symposium. Warning—the price for getting this one right is practice, but it's a solid example of what you get when your finger palm goes up to eleven. QUARTERMASTER: This is the effect that we all should have started with, but didn't. We would have learned how to manipulate spectators, rather than coins. Curtis will teach the professional routine he uses for strolling and corporate gigs as well as the refined handling designed for social impromptu settings. The pro handling is modular and scalable, allowing you to build to any of three different endings, or all three. More Importantly, Curtis will tip the answers he's discovered to questions that plague us all. Learn why polished, professional magic might be the wrong thing to learn, why beginners get busted, how to use a jumbo coin and how to end a set without one, how to script and why it matters, and maybe, if we let him, the ten things magicians get wrong about coin magic. |

I am not writing a full review here but:
I have been through this Curtis Kam lecture that he delivered (over two hours), last Sunday at Penquin Magic, and I am rather amazed that more coin magicians haven't commented on it here by this time. I mean this guy is one of the few "masters" in an area of magic in which there are so few - lest you use the term loosely. His easier version of Hanging Coins is brilliant and doable, and like his other stuff, shows such clever routine design. This version of a Roth classic is alone worth the price of the lecture. It's just soooo cool. He also discusses a concept I had never heard of before but which I find fascinating and important for most magicians: the distinction between professional magic and social magic. He honors both and describes briefly how a routine can and should be executed differently depending on who you are as a magican to be most effective. This is helpful on several levels. It's definitley an area for further research that would push the art and the stuff of future publication. I wish they had discussed this more on the lecture since it affects most magicians. There are some great commercial routines (including a card routine or two that really elicits great audience response) on this lecture. Curtis is an unapologetic "knucklebuster," but the results of his efforts are fabulous and a treat for coin magicians to watch and learn. Anyone familiar with coin magic though can take away something valuable here; routines, technique or a perspective. I have never met Curtis and despite me goading him to write more fully developed treatises on magic a while back thru an e-mail or two, we don't converse. Everyone knows he has a profound knowledge of magic history, and his writing style is intelligent. So are his methods and routine design. There is something here for all levels of magic proficiency - fascinating two hour lecture and a great value. Chuck

I also had the pleasure of watching Curtis' s Penguin lecture. I agree that his adaptation of Mike Close's patter suggestion was perfect for his hanging coins routine and gave the routine both life, and a great way to justify the ending. And speaking of endings, his finish for spellbound is both in line with my own philosophy about having an ending, and his climax is spectacular. Also very nice was his three fly handling with a surprise ending that will catch you by surprise because it looks so good. Not to talk about those darn card tricks, but if you need a coin break he showed some very commercial ideas. Loved the routine with the sea shell. For a worker, that alone might be worth the price of the lecture. A lot of the second half was philosophy, and advice, but he snuck in a very practical quarter routine as well. Every coin lecture from Penguin has been good. This ranks right up there. Worth it for the hanging coins alone (not just the story, the handling too), but you also get practical handlings for many other routines and even the card stuff!

You mention a lot of the amazing routines in this lecture in very little space, Michael. There is a lot to really rave about on this two hour lecture from Curtis so it is hard to mention it all.
And his ideas on Three Fly presentation are so freaking good....it just makes so much sense!!!! We didn't mention is creative use of the Little Hand.....whoa! Chuck

Well better he give us the hand rather than the finger.....but seriously folks, worthwhile stuff here. And even though he has a reputation for the hard stuff, his routines that are taught are within the range for most magicians, and unlike some lectures where you don't think you can use anything, here there are several routines you can really use, complete with presentation.

Thank you guys, I'm flattered that you took the time to listen to me yammer on like that. I hope there was something of interest in all of that. Dan is quite a host and I had a great time. I was working on a few assumptions when I put that lecture together. One theory was that the few of you who might actually try routines like the Cylinder and the Goblet wouldn't really need the explanations. So I only explained the bits that had interesting methods, like the hanging coins, and XSpell. (I consider these two routines, taken together with the 2 for 3 one-handed change in the Goblet, to be a quick class in advanced fingerpalm.)
There are advanced applications of all the other concealments, as well. More for later, I hope. If you missed this, and think you've mastered the fingerpalm, you maybe should check it out.

Honestly, your latest thinking on Three Fly is a "must attend this lecture" for all who perform this effect, Curtis. No matter the technique one uses, your observations here for a more powerful effect makes this lecture a real value to coin magicians who perform it (there are many).
Loved it!
