Hello: I have a couple of mint Laflin 36 inch cartoon silks for sale over at the "for sale" forum. I have the monkey/gorilla and clown. Both are mint and are $20.00 each postpaid in the states...or take them both for $35.00 postpaid. Elsewhere in the world will probably be $5.00 for Global Priority Shipping. If interested, please PM me or email me at rreidmagic@hotmail.com. Thanks. Ron |

I saw Duane demonstrate these at his lecture at Clownfest in Seaside Heights NJ a couple of years ago. It's a great routine and I love the look of the silks. They are definitely a "packs small, plays big item" I highly recommend them. Tony Parisi

I work with P and A silks a lot in designing new lines of silks and new tricks. We are in the process of developing a completely NEW and different line of "carney" style silks like mentioned above. These will be vastly different in style and will have some images of stuff people have been looking for and asking us about but can not be found otther places.
It should be a fun project and we are always open to ideas that any of you may have for this series. Just thought I would mention this to see if anyone has any feedback or ideas for the various silk designs. Please feel free to PM me any ideas you may have. Kyle

How are people using these silks?
-magically -in a story I've contemplated getting them, but haven't seen anything about what to use them for. your thoughts, john |

The silks come with a circus theme effect, and a nice barker routine, but I didn't use it.
I use a converted Temple Screen (different pictures), or the Wonder Silk Box (Denny & Lee) or a large Genii Tube. Any silk production box will work. I get three boys and a girl to help and ask them if they would help me with pictures of their dreams. I uses this effect with different comedy wands, the breakway wand, a dollar store Princess sound wand, Silly Billy's bending wand and Dusting feather wand, I do change the wands and try different ones to see the comedy effect they bring, such as David Ginn's Fishing Wand, Multiplying wands, etc. Each assistant is going to make a picture of something they would like to be when they grow up or something "they like to do". I have fun with each one. For instance, When using the multiplying wands or the feather duster, in a fun way I tell him to quit CLOWNING around, likewise with the breakaway wand I state that we we got to be serious and not to MONKEY around. I ask one boy not to bend the wand because it it really hard to bend and only a STONG MAN can do it. I ask the girl to make me one something she would like me to be besides a magician. A BALLERINA... is played on me which brings in the laughs, which I then say this isn't for me, it is for a pretty girl like you. I ask them all to face the audience, I stand in the middle and say to the parent's here is that KODAK moment. Obviously, this is not the complete routine but a synosis of what effect is done with these great comedy silks. You're welcome to develop your own using this brief format of producing comedy silks.

I'm currently making a blendo headless silk bag. You take a bag and fill it with sponge bananas (with the help of a child) and it turns into a monkey!

That is a very clever idea. Have you tried it out yet in a live performance? Kyle

Nope.
I haven't found a blendo pattern I like. I've started to get into the habit of looking at WHY things are amazing and WHY they are funny and TO WHO they work best. Really deconstruct every bit of a routine. I've found I can put a whole routine together and know it advance whether it will work! |

That is the best way to go about it. Learning the WHY behind things is important. This is why I video tape most all shows. Sometimes I am amazed and surprised at what gets a certain reaction and what may not. It helps me study it and learn from it.

I had an idea for a routine using the monkey silk, however I'm thinking it might offend the child. Tell me what you think. It's simliar to the classic 20th century silks using a change bag. Here it goes.
Two blue silks are tied together and a child is asked to hold them under his chin. Two other helpers stand on either side of this child and hold onto the ends of the blue silks. The birthday child is asked to help as well. After a few unsuccessful attempts a red silk finally vanishes. On the count of three the two helpers pull the ends of the blue silks. The monkey silk falls down assuming it's postition, the audience laughs. "Wait a minute where's the red silk then?." "Huh, what's this?." The birthday is asked to remove something from the change bag that was empty moments before. It's a bannana. The magician peels open the bannana and to the gasps of the audience pulls out the red silk from the centre of the bannana. What do you think? Thanks, Mike J Rogers

I like it!
Make yourself an idiot too by not noticing that the monkey has appeared. Let the child point it out. |

I have a Korn Silk with a headless gorilla on it and I've done this routine for years. It does bring in the laughs like the Laflin silks. So far I've offended no one, however, I am well aware of this. So when I pick the kids and assign them the silks I am careful who gets the monkey silk. I've had an incident with pictures and a comedy camera, where I innocently took picture of kids and one was a gorilla and another was a pair of monkeys. I was doing a show for a group of minority children and when I did this routine I realized someone might be offended after I pretended to take a picture , so I showed them the blank side and said the picture never came out so I had to take another and the camera was a squirting camera. Well, I did turn a potential incident into a comedy bit of business and did learn a lesson. Be careful not to offend. Be attuened to the audience.
With the Monkey silk, if I thought the crowd was a little stuffy I did the monkey silk on me and the three others pulled a trick on me. This effect allows for a variety of variations based on the audience. Unlike adult shows where one's routine is well designed for the best results, a kids show allows for interaction with the kids and EVERY show is different! Kids do say the darnest things, so one must make the most of that moment for greater humor. In a birthday setting I try to use all of the guest (Sometimes) the Milk picture routine uses thee or four. (Eight kids on these two effects.) I use 20th Century silks with the birthday child (9), Wiz-Kote (10) and Miser's Dream (11). Kids, unlike adults, do not "look into" those adult matters regarding what is offensive. Remember we are trained that burps and farts are impolite, however, with kids these are funny bits of business, if done right and in fun! A puppet that makes "noise" is funny to kids. I mean really funny. However, an effect that embarrasses a kid, such as "20th Century Underwear", would not be a choice ever, nor would doing a noise effect on a kid.

HI,
I use the silks to perform a version of "Charlies invisible message" from "children laugh louder" David Ginn. I start with the silks in a 3 way change bag and let the kids select a silk from the bag this way I can force a boy to get the balarina s girl to get the muscle man and the clown silk on the child I want to ultimatly help me . I also have a 36" clowns head silk in the crystal box for the climax. this is not a cheap routine to make up but it plays well and packs quite small. phillip |
