Why does it have to be one side or the other? Perform what is proper for the moment.
I use props on stage that are part of the act. Pictures, a water glass, etc. Since I always have some sort of theme, not just "Watch Me! I Can Read Your mind!", these items are a legitimate part of the performance and without them, it would not be the same. For example, this last weekend I used a map on stage. The map was part of an effect and the effect helped to tell (and move forward) the story. I could have done it with a different method, but it would have been flat, and certainly would not have achieved the same level of spectator astonishment that I got by using the prop. I have an also use several psychological effects that require nothing, which are great for when I am asked to 'do something' at a party, etc, and a host of other things that fall in between. The point is, unless you are performing in front of a mirror, the objective of the performance is to entertain the audience and do so in the best way possible. I for one am certainly not going to limit myself in method and thus risk NOT providing the best entertainment possible for that particular audience. |

Some props are invisible props. Household items, or stuff from the junk drawer. Honestly, paperbacks, magazines, a beat up pack of cards, random coins or dice, pencils, markers, notepads, bowls, newspapers, etc, are virtually non props. And pure propless mentalism works great to extend or connect other invisible prop mentalism.
The Deal or No Deal peice that Eric Dittelman did on AGT was a showstopper and honestly made me revisit some very good ideas which I had shelved due to my perception of their being "too prop-y". People also love production values and showmanship, and there isn't anything in the premise of mentalism that automatically precludes that. |
