I am a close up magician, all my effects are with cards, coins, chop cup etc. I have been approached by a friend who has asked me if I would entertain a group of young girls, aged 8-12. They are Brownies(english youth club).
They want me to do an hours stand up and teach them a trick too. Any ideas of how to turn my close up into something entertaining and that plays bigger for the girls. Additionally any idea of something that they could learn? I want them to go away and have really enjoyed it and tell their parents about it. |

For this age, why not stick with what you know. I would do a 40 show with what you described. I think a cups and balls routine with some unexpected productions at the end (lemon, onion, a beet to keep the "beat" of the music going) is always good for an ending to the show. You can teach them a French drop at this age, or the card trick "Will the cards match" is also a good one for this age.
Just think of them as young adults. For girls this age(more 10-12), limit the cards effects. More sponge balls, coins, and prediction effects work well. |

Hello Paul,
I have done a LOT of shows and workshops for Brownie groups over the years, they're always great fun to entertain! Send me your e-mail address and I'll send you some information on things you may be able to use. - Mike

A hour show is tough if you're only used to close-up, so you need to look to dress up some of the routines
e.g. coin unique use a tray/board held by two volunteers and the largest glass you can get - then third volunteers moves the glass to vanish the coin tossed out deck using jumbo picture cards (from the 99p shop) sponge balls to pocket (3 phase) Others you can demo your skill with normal cards and props. And remember Paul Daniels developed his reputation from the Chop Cup. Superb routines entrance any audience. I've often done Brownies and Guide Shows - often as part of their Entertainers Badge. I entertain, teach them a couple of tricks and then watch them entertain me using song, dance or dance. Tricks I teach include card warp, making their own clear force bag (from two A-4 clear plastic pockets) and a colour force. (I've also taught these at Leaders' Training Sessions.)
