...but I just saw Spike Lee's Mo' Better Blues on the big screen at a Spike Lee festival.
Wow. That was brilliantly directed. Spike Lee the man may not be my favorite person in the world, but that was an amazing follow up to Do the Right Thing, a year earlier. Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Joie Lee, Robin Harris, music from the Marsalis Brothers, and more talent per square inch on that screen every minute than most films in their entirety. Beautiful cinematography, arresting mise-en-scene. Lee is usually compared to Woody Allen because he acts, writes, produces, and directs his films. But I think the more accurate comparison is Scorsese in his ear and eye for film and his love for New York rhythms.

Ha! I saw it in the movie theater last night.
