Some words to contemplate:
"I believe we are at a crossroads these days in mentalism. On top of significant problems of exposure and thievery, too many others trivialize and dumb-down the art. The media and internet aren't helping either and only magnify and intensify many other issues. What slowly happened to magic is more quickly happening right now with mentalism. Dumbed-down magic is for kids. Do that to mentalism, and it is dead" - Richard Busch 'The Destiny Response It seems to be happening. How many people are now happily pretending to be mentalists, running around doing the same effects and jumping on the bandwagon - it happened after the "Street Magic' specials of David Blaine, and again with Derren Browns' "Mind Control". Just head on over to youtube and you'll see exposures, poorly performed effects and you can even watch full-circle Q&As with people talking shop, it seems a sad state of affairs to me. Then of course the industry is rubbing it hands with glee, making a great deal of money selling DVDs, tricks and methods to anyone who'll pay - no questions asked, no interest in making sure the material is suited to your skill-set... Nope the only aim it seems is to make money and satisfy needs of the instant-gratification generation! Annemann is the one for me and I took the following words of his to heart "Study to be entertaining first, and make your trick incidental" Any thoughts? Not to forget that Annemann also advertised his 202 Methods of Forcing in men's magazines- the ads, of course, implied that the secrets were about forcing women to do what you wanted.
But I don't believe that selling books and materials through magic dealers is anywhere near the same as the indiscriminate exposure that goes on today. |

There are still many who have not sold out. Many people are vetting their customers. You just don't hear about it.
