I just got back, I performed the Flatline card stab and I got generally positive reactions. I did get a comment along the lines of "how did you make that sharpie, a hammer?" So there is an element of them knowing there was a switch during the routine. One person asked to keep the flattened Sharpie and had to say no. No earth-shattering routines. I don't think I will be using this a lot.

How is this NOT an impossible object? Seems pretty impossiblish to me.

Would it melt perfectly to look like a perfect spoon shape at the end?

I think you would end up with a melty, blobby mess.

I like Sharpie routines or add ons to current card effects. This doesn't seem to me as much of an Add-on. More of a oddity. Am I missing something.

First, as to this being an impossible object. In the sense that people don't normally take Sharpie markers and flatten them, well, yes, in that sense, it is an impossible object in the CONTEXT of the effects.
But what would such an object look like? Have any of us ever seen one? Have our spectators? I think not. Therefore the end result is entirely up to the imagination, and a spoon like shape is quite plausible. I doubt any spectator is going to say "I flattened a Sharpie once, and that is not how it's shaped! Busted!" In essence, what Jay has done is take an imaginary object and turned it into a utilitarian, physical reality that we can hold in our hands and use as our imagination deems. A spoon like shape? How else is it supposed to look? Personally, I think he has thought it out pretty well and accurately. As for the effect he is aiming for, I suppose in the physical world, the only way to achieve it would be to run over the end of it with a steam roller! Or perhaps stick it on a railroad track like we used to do with pennies when we were kids. Or possibly a machine press at the local factory. And in those cases a spoon like shape is quite plausible. Of course, we can assume it would splinter and crack and sharpie ink would leak out, but that is not the effect he is after. Those kind of results would not be magical, but rather, just a wreck! In this magical scenario and in the context of the effects, we are imagining that the plastic of the Sharpie becomes like putty or clay, not hard plastic. As for a heat gun being applied, that is not commensurate with the effect that Jay was trying to convey, so the argument is fallacious. These effects are the application of extreme pressure by magic. These would not produce a melty, blobby end result. Extreme pressure would surely flatten it, were it a clay like substance, and the spoon shape is a very logical, believable end result. So I feel Jay did indeed think this through.Â

Well maybe I'm over-analyzing (as usual!) but I think this is a tres strange concept and I also feel that creators should try to move away from Sharpie's as their go-to gimmick. Just sayin.

It's not the worst thing Jay Sankey has released, but personally, it's a little underwhelming. I love some of Jay's stuff but he does still seem to release at least 5 bits of mediocre magic before a bit of gold comes out. Just feels like an odd item to me.

Jay's simply discovered and utilizing a success principal of life Specifically it reminds me of something I once heard concerning a different subject : photography. A young photographer once asked a pro: "What's the secret of taking great pictures?" His answer: "Take lots and LOTS of pictures."
Or another old aphorism: "Throw enough spaghetti against the wall, and some of it's bound to stick."

Well said daffydoug, sure the routine may not fit into all working professionals routines but it may fit into other peoples routines (kids magicians, etc.) Plus if your performing style matches it, you could have a VERY strong piece of magic.

In the world of magic, probably with the exception of the t.t., one size seldom fits all.
You can please some of the people some of the time, and you can please all the people some of the time. But you can't please all the people all of the time. Well said again , Daff. (Pat myself on the back.), go out and smoke a celebratory cigar.

Way too much over-analyzing here, or maybe not enough creative thinking? It is far easier to just bash something than to think awhile about how to actually use it. I am a very creative person so I could think of quite a few uses for this, even if just as a gag or making a kid have "super strength" for a few seconds while holding it. With items like this you are only limited by your own imagination or if you lack creativity. But that is why Jay provides some of his own ideas.
The great trouble with magicians is the fact that they believe when they have bought a certain trick or piece of apparatus, and know the method or procedure, that they are full-fledged mystifiers. -- Harry Houdini
