Anyone watching this series?
What's with the background talk describing the scenes? Is this NBCs idea of attracting blind folks to television? Yikes. It's quite annoying. At least give us an option to turn it off.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

Hit the language or close caption button on your remote. Sounds like you have the option for the visually impaired activated. I did that by accident once and, like you, was wondering what was going on. (It's an option only available on certain shows. I believe Crossbones is one of them.)

I've never heard of this series before but if it's good enough for you both to know of it ...it must be good. I'll check to see if I have this channel.

It's really good, Chrystal. It's about the pirate Blackbeard, played by John Malkovich.

I didn't know they had a visually impaired option too, which is great for those who need it. But if you don't need it, it's very distracting. I'll have to have a look around my options. Thanks again sir. @ Chrystal, Crossbones is a good series and you might find it interesting. As is typical with John Malkovitch, he plays this role suprerbly.

Just keep pushing the language/close caption button and you'll find the right setting. That's what I did.

Closed captioning, Huh?
I don't know why people feel the need to mess with the natural order of things. If god would have wanted deaf or blind people to watch TV he would not have made them deaf or blind. It's just not natural. Exodus 4:11 Then the Lord said to him, “Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? |

I made it through one episode, but just barely. The history is wrong, the storyline implausible and Malkovich is just phoning it in.

Disagree completely. I think it's excellent. And it isn't intended to be a documentary.

I have to agree with Bob on this one. I started watching it after I heard good things about it here at the Café (not at Rotten Tomatoes ) Malkovich is top notch IMHO.

Malkovitch is always top notch.

Not all this angst and badly written personal relationships drivel. Plus shouldn't Blackbeard have a Black Beard? Tradition and legend has it that he kept burning matches in it in battle. Something Mr. Malkovitch would have difficulty with the wimpy Van Dyke he's sporting. This combined with the nonsensical Longitude storyline (H1 was built a dozen years after Blackbeard's demise) for me makes the show unwatchable. Exactly how would being able to determine Longitude eradicate piracy anyway? Today we can instantly determine a ships actual position within a few feet yet there are still pirates to be found in the world. The real history of pirates and piracy is far more interesting than this sanitized pabulum were being spoon-fed in the name of entertainment. I'm glad you're enjoying the show. I just have better things to do than waste time watching a program that my wife and I spend most of our time rolling our eyes in disbelief over.

Every party needs a pooper that's why we invited you...
Everybody sing! BTW- Burning matches in one's beard won't turn it black. It will simply burn it off. I used to have black hair- but, like Blackbeard, age has changed things. (I know lots of guys named "Red" whose hair and beards are now gray. We still call them "Red," though. |

So it's the length of Malkovich's beard that I take issue with. As well as his age. Blackbeard was dead at 40. Malkovich is far too old to be playing the part.

In those days forty was old. And people who were forty looked a lot older than they do today.

So pirate years are like dog years?

Not really. But when Blackbeard was alive disease was common, nutrition was poor and the average life span was 35 years.
