The internet has been responsible for fundamentally changing the nature of mentalism and mentalism related purchases. Some of the changes have been positive. Many (most?)have been negative. Perhaps the most negative change has been the ability for people to release single effect e-books and charge $20 for them because they have a "mentalism" angle and mentalism has always been more expensive than plain old magic, no? When one considers that many effects from old-school, bricks-and- mortar stores come with gaffs, specially printed cards etc for a similar price, one would hope a "creator" believed they were releasing something pretty special to charge $20 for a digital copy of a manuscript.
Yin Yang Principle is not something pretty special in my opinion. If you have Murray's 'Springboard' or Russ Andrews 'AKA' or (cough) 'Spoken' then you have no need for this release. It uses an identical plot and almost identical method to AKA, with the alleged difference that no pack of cards is used. Well, that is true - but it means you end up with an effect that is so far from being 100% I can't even be bothered to think of the percentages. The true add copy should read: You ask the spectator to think of a card. You then lead them through a series of steps to create a different card. You instantly name the different card....or.. you don't...but don't worry. Regardless of the fact that your card may be miles off from what the spec is thinking, we supply you with the linguistic magic to make them believe you have actually read their mind...if they have had a lobotomy. An actual example given in the text is: the spectator is thinking of the five of spades, you are thinking of the queen of clubs. Somehow, Gerard believes the participant will be convinced that this is close to a miracle. You may not be so certain. Luckily, I have money to fritter away on effects that catch my fancy, but I know a lot of people do not. $20 is a lot of cash to people. "Creators" should think long and hard about their pricing for effects if they don't wish to upset customers. This may have been worthwhile as an effect in a manuscript with nine or ten other, better effects, but $20 for this is, to be polite, not sensible pricing. It can be performed over the phone. |

Hi Martin,
Thanks for your review. First of all, let me tell you I agree with it. Now let me give my view on this. - Pricing: I already gave some inputs on this somewhere in this forum. Pricing is personal and I stick to it for now. How do I personally make the pricing? Simple: rate exchange (€/$), comparison with similar effects, and most importantly: Is it a “principle” or an effect? How many doors will it open? Will it finish in drawers? Is it something I can do anytime anywhere? Do I use it? Is it practical? Are they amazed when I do it? , Etc. - I have been in contact with Michael Murray on FB and by mail. I think he understood the “finesse”. I personally do not use a normal out, or a deck of cards. I prefer taking the risk of missing and explaining why, or I combine it with other principles of mine, published or not. But I agree with you the basic process is very close to AKA. This is what I told everybody who contacted me about it. I redirected them to buy AKA. - I like improvised magic and this is one of the principles I have been using anytime anywhere. In combination with another principle of mine,I can guess any thing in the world, not just a card. So, it definitely opens doors. It is not a card "trick". - I disagree with what you say about the 5 of Spades etc. This is just an example I tried to imagine, to show how to work out (theoretically) a worse case scenario if you just use the principle. In practice, you would use classic outs for such rare cases . Personally I do not use outs , especially cards like in AKA. It's all explained in the ebook. If your wording is right, you won't get such cases. Also, during the process you can see body signs that will give you some clues...Or I use something like “MIMOSA” with my smartphone, or other principles of mine like UPS2 (unpublished yet). Otherwise, there are existing outs available on the market for such occasions. - I understand your final comment. I have been upset too with some purchases. I give my email in every ebook and every direct buyer can contact me. If you bought through another site, contact them. If it is LYBRARY.COM, they have a good service and I am sure they have a solution for this. Or you can contact me directly if you bought from my site. Gerard |

I have finally published "Think of anything in the world". It is probably one of the most challenging effects a mentalist can do.
Presented as a quick and improvised telepathy experiment, I can tell you it kills, even if you do not hit the exact thing thought by the participant. It can be performed one on one, or with an audience. It may not be for everybody, but it works for me. If you already own "Yin Yang V1", send me a PM. Gerard |
