Does anybody know the correct height for a table, seemingly designed for parlor performances, such as used in the L&L video shoots? Is there a correct or standard measurement?Â
I was watching Aldo's performances and it occurred to me that a certain height will allow for several things. If you need a spectator to push, say, a card out of the spread, too high of a table would be awkward. And in these settings, the people sitting around need to get a clear view of your cards and props on the table from where they are sitting. Too high, and their sight line would be obscured, and the whole show  would go largely unseen! And at the same time, too low, and it would be difficult for the performer to perform without bending his back uncomfortably. There has to be an ideal height, and I wonder how Louis and the gang figured this out. My current table is about two foot, eight inches, and I feel that would be too high for parlour, so I'm thinking of the possibility of having a new one constructed, although it seems the one in the L&L shoots is not portable. Looks pretty heavy, as a matter of fact.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

There are some nice tables out there with adjustable height.
They have to be portable, unless you are installing one permanently in a venue. I like my Instand side tables: http://www.instand.com/ I have used these as side tables on stage and as a cocktail table for standing audiances and for sit down parlor. The more people crowded around the higher they need to be. A related issue is how big and what surface. Covered or not covered. Its not a big deal to reach down and change the height if needed. Card spreads vs. coins vs. cups and balls all might need something a little different. |
