Of all the earth shaking events taking place around the world, do we need this mixed in as world breaking news "Rob Gronkowski cleared by doctors; will not be placed on Physically Unable to Perform list, according to New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick"? What does that tell the world about our priorities and interests when it shares the same news space as potentially life changing events unfold around the globe?

It's always been that way. Sports news was also popular throughout WWII, and often it provides a brief respite from the daily horrors in the world.

I have no problem with that if it is on the Sports page or buried within the paper/website but not when it is sandwiched between "real" news. I might have grudgingly accepted it, if it was of world interest such as World Cup soccer, Olympics, etc.

I have been listening to the BBC Radio to and from work. The current events (which were being repeated throughout the day) was causing my BP to rise, so I switched back to easy listening.

So the only things news worthy are what then in your view?

Possibly you didn't notice my reference was to the category "world breaking news" and not news in general.

I've also noticed a trend over the past few years for local TV news to inject a "BREAKING NEWS" item (or two) into their broadcasts. Usually it's in the form of a bright BREAKING NEWS banner followed by the newscaster saying something like, "And now here's some breaking news about that bear that was spotted near the golf course earlier today", or something equally unearth-shattering. It seems that everything is amped up a notch in order to catch viewers' attention. To me, "BREAKING NEWS" is not when a bear is spotted near a golf course - breaking news would be when a bear carjacks someone and is in a 90 mile an hour police chase on the highway!

Even so how would that impact the world?

And here I thought "breaking news" just meant something that has just happened or is still on-going when the initial news report is made.
In local news reports that could be just about anything. |

Alright, I'll back off. They just released another pressing story of "Storage shed overturned by wind at Arkansas State University farm in Jonesboro".

With all the information we have at our fingertips these days, I've found that its extremely important to be careful what I allow to get through.
I recently took an extended vacation from the internet, except for email. For a month I used my phone only for commmunication and my desktop like a television. I had to. I was addicted. It reminded me of when I was a kid and you got the news from the paper in the morning and one hour of television at night. I highly recommend it. It's like opening the windows and letting the fresh air clear out your brain.

I don't watch the news, and haven't for years.

There may be some "breaking"-worthy stories from time to time, but it mostly seems like a disingenuous attempt to get your attention, and perhaps to outdo their competitor stations. Not a biggie, but it is something I have noticed. Along with a disturbing trend to have weathermen partake in non-weather related stories (e.g., playing ring-toss at a local fair, or interviewing a family having a cookout). :-) Ron

Didn't Al Roker make a name for himself doing that for decades? And if you really want to go way back, do you remember Dr. Frank Field, who ended up being almost a regular on the Tonight Show?

Good old Dr. Frank Field, the NYC NBC weatherman on in the east coast whose forecasts were aired just before the Tonight Show aired. Johnny had a lot of fun with him! AKA "NBC's crack meteorologist" according to Carson.
The NBC commissary also got a lot of press by Carson as well.

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |
