While I was looking around the internet for different methods of readings, I found this site for reading Runes.
http://www.dionaea.com/fun/runes.html It has the different runes, as well as the meanings of each rune, and it also descrides one method of laying the runes. What do you guys think of the site? What do you think about doing readings with Runes? |

Nothing wrong with doing readings with Runes. There's an idea of Rudy Hunter's applied to Runes in my book Mindful Mentalism 2 (available in the U.S.A from H & R Books).
Jim Magus once put out a booklet on Rune effects, I think I had it years back but personally got nothing from it. Once published an effect myself, but cannot remember where! lol. "The Healing Runes" by Ralph H. Blum and Susan Loughan gives a more spiritual interpretation, that may be more acceptable in certain quarters. Paul. |

As a professional rune reader, I would recommend avoiding anything written by Ralph Blum.
He has a pretty poor reputation in the metaphysical community due to sloppy research on his part. My favorite book for learning how to use the runes for divination is "At the Well of the Wyrd" by Edred Thorsson.

I completely agree with Philemon about R Blum. I recommend everything written by Edred Thorsson or/and Tony Willis.
And a lot of practice... Mystery of the runes, by Jim Magus is an interesting approach of psychic experiments with runes. I believe it's the only book written in english enterely devoted to mentalism with runes. It was avaliable at Lee Jacobs... Best- Didier |

Ron Martin also published a book on doing readings with Runes and if it's anything like The Tarot Readers Notebook. you won't be disappointed.

I bow to Philemon's superior knowledge as a professional rune reader, if anyone should know what's what on Runes, he should!
I have no doubt there are better books on teaching you how to do readings, the book I mentioned was certainly not so. I simply found the spiritual interpretation intriguing. As for sloppy research I assume this means on the meanings of the runes? This interested me with the Tarot. Joe Riding taught how to read the Tarot on video, but ignored traditional meanings of some cards just created things suggested by the pictures on the cards.Which may have made things easier to learn/remember. His readings are still accepted. I guess that is the magician's approach? Paul. |

It is the wise approach, Paul. All the client wants is the information.
A similar approach is recommended in "Tarotmania" which in my opinion is the best shut eye book on the Tarot. The author is Jan Woudhuysen who interestingly enough once wrote a book on typing. It is also a spiritual approach. What the cards mean to YOU the reader is far more important than what they are supposed to mean because some book said it. I am well aware of the argument that people are knowledgable about cards so you should use traditional meanings. People are indeed knowlegable about psychic matters. However, I have also discovered that the more knowledgable they are the more braindead they are and the easier it is to con them. Sorry, I shall rephrase that. The more knowledgeable people are about psychic matters the more open they will be to your interpretations since they are prone to alternative belief systems. Oh let me go back to my usual style. The more knowledgable and shut ey they are the more naive they are. They will beleive anything you say since you are the "expert". For this reason I never use reversed card meanings. It takes long enough to learn the regular meanings. Interstingly enough, Richard Webster astonished me by telling me that HE learned the tarot from Joe Riding's little book too! |

Philemon is 100% dead on when it comes to AVOIDING Blum... worse source in the world when it comes to ACCURATE insights on such... Thornsen is the better deal.
I see a lot of "magic" oriented references in this list however and quite honestly, I don't recommend ANY OF THEM... if you want to learn how to be a "Reader" then learn the actual science via a shut-eye resource. For the Tarot I would have to say the Eileen Connolly series and for the really hardcore "I want to know the deeper stuff" types, I'll recommend the guide book that goes to the Pythagorean Tarot deck by John Opsopaus (very, freaking awesome points of view!) Not that I'd be self promoting, but some of you new to the whole Readers role, may find my coloumn @ Visions On-Line of interest. Oh!... I will ditto what was said about Jim Magus... some very cool material for mini-readings as well as Bizarre work. He and Stephan Minch also put out some sound ideas on the Tarot as well.

It is interesting that Darmoe mentions Jim Magus.
I have never met Jim but I believe I know his cousin. At least she SAID she was his cousin. A professional shut eye psychic nevertheless. She did the psychic fairs in Canada for a while, then she had a radio show which she invited me on but I had to turn back when I was halfway there. I cannot remember why. Probably a snowstorm or something. I think she had a psychic tearoom in Kitchener, Ontario. I haven't seen her for a few years. With regard to Runes I invented a system that would horrify Philemonom! After I learned to read cards the Joe Riding way I decided to learn the Runes. However, I got a fit of laziness and just couldn't be bothered. Then I took a closer look at the stones and realised that a lot of them reminded me of cards in the major Arcana. For example there is one symbol that looks a bit like a rope if you use your imagination. I therefore designated that as the Hanged Man. The one with the letter P reminded me of the High Priestess. And so on. I did this with every stone. I worked out a tarot meaning for each stone so whenever I do the runes I am really doing a tarot card reading in disguise! Not the "proper" way but if it earns me money who cares anyway? |

Another excellent book on Runes is called
"Helrunar" by Jan Fries. Talks about the Indo-europeans, and where the Runes may have originated. It also explains that the commonly accepted meanings are not absolutely correct.
Still with the Chinese circus

Is it just my imagination (sinility) or am I seeing double postings?
