I saw a Die Box that had a gold cube instead of a die. Does any one know the name and source of this box? The box had an unusual finish. It has a thick clear coat over a brownish paint scheme. It had no door gimmicks.
This was not a custom made item but a marketed item. |

Sounds like a see through die box http://home.nwi.net/~magicmel/seethru.html

It was a Die Box put out by Supreme Magic called, Block of Gold. I can't even find a picture of one now,

It's not a Die Box, but Ali Bongo's Apple and the Block of Gold had a similar prop.

Potty, This is Ali Bongo's trick.
http://practical-magic.com/online-shop/a......d-detail I'm pretty sure that Supreme did have a Die Box with a block of gold. MagicMike, do you have a photo of the prop you are enquiring about, otherwise we are all speculating? |

The Ali Bongo trick is different, but I'd imagine inspired by the Die Box in question.
I'm not sure how popular the Supreme trick was, but it seems rare when it is even discussed. I have seen photos of it before (probably on a used magic site), and someone once inquired about having me repaint one. There is a block trick described in one of the Albo books that is essentially a cross between a die box and a drawer box. I made several of these with an Okito spin, but I accidentally made one that is more rectangular than square. because it would never pass as a cube die, I just left it sitting here unfinished. The block of gold might be a reason to now complete it.

Not the see through or the breakaway. The gold block looks like the one in Ali Bongo's trick but it does not have black edges. Just a gold cube. I don't have a picture. I saw it at a shop. I really liked it but didn't buy it because it didn't have the door gimmicks.
I know the routine would play fine without the door gimmicks but it's nice to have the option. |

On reflection, I think it was EMA (Edwin's Magic Arts) that marketed the gold block Die Box. And not long after Edwin died, so there won't be many of them around.

Supreme Magic manufactured both the Supreme Die Box and the Supreme Block of Gold.
The Block of Gold effect was Supreme's version of the die box effect for a young audience. Both effects are in the Supreme catalogue that was issued in the late 70's/early 80's. The Block of Gold Die Box did not have a clear finish over a brown finish. The block itself was hollow so that it could hold candy or a special load that could be removed from a top hat after the block was removed from the hat. One of these sold in the Magic Auction last year for $111.00. |

I could be wrong about the brown finish but it had such a thick clear coat that I thought it was wrapped in cellaphane when the dealer handed it to me. It was definitely a die box but was somewhat ornate and the cube was probably 2".

Why do you not call the shop/dealer where you saw the effect?

Quentin is incorrect - that doesn't happen often, so it was nice to be here to see it. "The Block of Gold' was a Supreme effect. The box was red and black as opposed to the blue and black version that was a regular die box. Peter is correct that the inner die was hollow to hold a load of sweets. It came with some patter about 'tripping over the block while walking past King Solomon's Mines the other morning' - typical Edwin.
I used one in my 'Reading is Believing' show for years.

I think my confusion stems from a recollection that the catalogue ad for 'block of gold' came with a line drawing rather than a photo and many items in the EMA catalogues came with line drawings.
But I could be wrong. |

Ok to the person who posted the Ali Bongo effect apple and the block f gold. I purchased this setup at a swap meet last year and have been working on a routine ever since not quite finding what I wanted . That is until today! Thank you so much. I,also think I have the die box effect in question at home and it is indeed a supreme product I have the original instructions as well but the name escapes me. It will be a while before I am back home as I have an extended contract in Osala Japan. Wish I could be more help .

Why do you not call the shop/dealer where you saw the effect? The demonstrator didn't seem to know anything more about it. The shop is about an hour and a half away and I don't know when I'll bet back there. I passed it up but once I got home I started to think I kind of liked it. If I found it on line I might order it. I still wish it had the door fake. |
