I posted this earlier on another part of the Café, but thought perhaps I would get more feedback here. I post RARELY on the Café, as many probably know, but I've seen something more recently and find it a bit of a game changer, and if nothing else simply interesting and am wondering what other fellow professionals think. I am a full-time mentalist based out of Wichita, KS, and have done a lot of spots on radio and TV over the years locally. I did a radio interview this past Monday (just two days ago)where I spoke about some upcoming public shows I have as well as a new program for veterans that I'm working on with a fellow performer. Of course, as is typically the case, I come prepared with a few things to perform live that play well to radio listeners.
I am used to doing a radio interviews and then perhaps taking a picture or two with the host(s) to put on their website or things of that nature. This time, however, this host told me that we would perform one particular effect during the live interview and that another bit would be recorded on camera as a video and put up on their website. He told me they are making him do this more and more to drive internet traffic and that it helps their listenership, etc. I will admit I didn't mind at all doing something for video but it made me wonder if that is something that I should always keep in mind from now on when doing radio interviews. Do many of you prepare in this fashion? Below is the video of what I did. I love opportunities at free publicity, and work hard to provide content that helps me get it, but regret that I failed to mention my website and stuff in the video spot like we did in the live interview. Anyway, just curious if others are finding this the case more and more. Seems like a good thing to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmef3KRb......0ozZ9C6Q

Well done, Curt. It's been about ten years since I last did radio, but I suspect you're right. If I decide to do it again I will be prepared to do video.
Thanks for posting that. Bob |

Thanks for the kind words, gentlemen. I think this is something worth keeping in mind. In the past I've always been racking my brain to take my working repertoire and tweaking it a bit to make it work for radio (which isn't really THAT difficult) for maximum impact, but from now on I'm always going to be prepared to do something a bit more visual (or at least plays well to a camera), knowing this is highly likely to be an option. There is such a limited amount of time when doing live radio (or even TV for that matter) since it is a constantly moving thing and I want to keep the station happy and leave them wanting more as well as wanting to have me back on the air in the future. Radio stations are always looking for good content to keep listeners happy and advertisers spending money. Now entertaining videos on their website seems to be a regular part of all of that. I feel we might as well take good advantage of that. The host also shared that radio people claim that within the next few years almost all new automobiles (where MOST listenership exists) will contain radios that are strictly APP-based; i.e. no FM/AM stuff anymore, but apps where stations are selected and programmed solely by the owners and stations will be fighting for top shares of that market. I don't know how true or accurate this is, but I think it's something to think about as we consider how to best take advantage of media to promote ourselves or our events as entertainers.
