It's very sad. "Choose turnip" sounds much better than "choose card"

Sigh. Are we really going to have wade thru the stale cards and mentalism discussion again?
Boring! Bairn is brilliant. Your lecture was brilliant. More, sir. Please, may I have more. Later, D |

It's OK but too many cards effects, audiences hate those. You could tell when K did his CAAN effect at Penguin that the moment the card was revealed the participant stifled a huge yawn. It's not like the effect had totally the best reaction of the whole set.

All he appears to be saying is that in his opinion (which he's entitled to, regardless of whether or not anyone agrees with it) there are too many card effects. That's fine, it doesn't make it right or wrong, it doesn't mean it's true or false, it's just his opinion which is as valid and as valuable as anyone's on here. You needn't defend or explain the book; simply state what it is, give the facts (there are x number of card tricks etc) let all the reviews come in, and most will be able to form a reasoned judgement. There will always be some who are disappointed in a book, and there's absolutely no problem with that, they are just as entitled to think that, and say it, and explain why, than those who write effusive prose extolling the wondrous thing that is Bairn. For me, when I read my copy I was happy to find that using velcro in mentalism is included. You cant please everyone all the time, so don't try to; let the world judge the book. Publish and be ***ed and give everyone their right to their opinion. |

I read Bairn a couple of weeks ago on holiday and it was superb, I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was a pleasure to read. I really liked the intros, very funny! It was written very clear and concisely, just as importantly, the effects are fantastic. I can see me using many effects.
Great value for money, I would definitely recommend. Well done Ken. Looking forward to your next book 👍 |

For those of you that are looking for more, I thought I'd mention that I've listed Ken's out of print and limited edition (150 copies) book "Whisper" in the "books for sale" portion of the forum. Thanks for sharing your ideas, Ken! Scotty |

Here's a small gripe I have with one of the routines in the book.
It's a book test. The effect is scripted as follows (before the explanation is given): Performer: "This book. Is it yours?" Participant: "It is." ...then follows the book test. Even the scene painted of a mentalist in jail suggested the idea that this is a book test you can do with no props (and no trick books). Now of course I'm excited that this is a book test you'll be able to do with someone else's book. Then the explanation makes it clear that you use a trick book (and an expensive one). So that was disappointed. It is a good routine, but why exaggerate to such a point in the outline of the effect? when clearly the performer cannot say, "This book. Is it yours?" Surely most people would answer, "No, it's yours. You just handed it to me." He does append to the routine an alternative way to do it if you don't have your $200 book, but this also precludes you from doing it from someone else's book (it requires you to gimmick an ordinary book in an irreversible and somewhat damaging way). |

What would be the approximate percentage of card effects in this book?
