I am interested in completing my collection of the early Magicana issues. I'm not sure of the exact dates and such, though, so I need some information.
I know Bill Woodfield's Magicana began as a monthly magazine in May 1946. The second and final issue was in June 1946. The column Charlie Miller wrote started in Genii in November 1964, but I know it ran in The Conjurors' Magazine after the monthly periodical stopped. Does anybody have the dates of the issues that appeared in The Conjurors' Magazine? Also, as I stated before, Miller began the column in Genii in November 1964. Does anyone know when Charlie stopped actively writing it? Thanks everyone, Cameron |

Not an expert on this but I do have two bits of information:
1- I checked the contents lists for my set of Conjuror's Magazines. I only found one Magicana listing. Vol. 3, No. 7, Sept 1947, pp 37-40. Magicana, Supplement to Conjuror's Magazine, Number 1. Woodfield lists additional items planned for future issues, but I didn't spot any in the contents listed on the covers of later issues of Conjuror's Magazine. 2- Richard Kaufmann comments on status of issue of a reprint collection of the Magicana articles in a posting early last year on the Genii forum. He refers to the first two issues, that you mention, Conjuror's Magazine (doesn't say if there is more than one), Genii in the 50s, through all the Charlie Miller articles. You might pose the question with Richard via email, or via a posting on the Genii Forum. Might also ask re status of the reprint edition. Let us know what you discover. Good luck, Steve

Thank you very much, Steve. I really appreciate it. This is what I've got so far.
The two lone issues: Magicana, May 1964 Magicana, June 1964 One issue in The Conjurors' Magazine: The Conjurors' Magazine, Vol. 3, No. 7, September 1947 Started in Genii as Bill Woodfield's column: According to some information just posted on the Genii forum, I know that Magicana was running in Genii as early as 1948 (Vol. 12, No. 8, April 1948). The Charlie Miller columns began in November 1964. What is the exact date the Woodfield column began in Genii (circa 1947-48)? When did the Woodfield columns stop? When did the Charlie Miller columns stop? I really appreciate your response. If anybody can answer any more of the above questions, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Cameron |

So you got me started looking. I found date of death of William Read Woodfield via a web search. From the date I found the obiturary in Genii magazine. See Feb 2002, pp 16-19. Includes a reprint of Magicana Number 1 and a summary of the history of Magicana Magazine. Per the article: May 1946 Number 1 June 1946 Number 2 Sept 1947 Conjuror's Magazine, an abridgement of first two issues Jan 1948 first installment in Genii magazine April 1949 last installment in Genii magazine Nov 1964 Genii magazine, New Series Number 1 The list ends there. I do not have a complete set but have many issues through New Series #154 (Apr 1978). #153 (Mar 1978) and 154 (Apr 1978)list Elizabeth Wilson as editor. In 1981 the Magicana column no longer shows New Series numbers, and again lists Charlie Miller and William Read Woodfield as editors. A quick scan of the contents lists for issues after 1981 indicate. Sept 1987 last by Charlie Miller Feb 1989 reappeared edited by James Patton According to Patton the Apr 1978 issue was the last of the new series. No issues appeared in 1979 and 1980. The column returned in 1981, as a column rather than as numbered issues. That now looks complete, up to the start of the issues with Patton as editor. Steve

Thanks again for all the information, Steve. I think I'll track down that February 2000 issue of Genii to read the first issue of Magicana. Thanks.
