As someone new to serious pursuing card magic and studying Royal Road to Card Magic I sometimes find this book, whilst detailed, hard to understand. Are there any good DVD accompaniments to this great book?
What would be some other good books to study? Perhaps including a self-working card trick book to help build my repetoire? Many thanks. |

R. Paul Wilson has a DVD set...Royal Road to Card Magic

There is a dvd set by Paul Wilson. Use it with the book and LEARN how to read magic books.

OK, I'll bite, how DO you read a magic book?

With magic or any other field of study, you need to first learn how to read books on the subject. Most people find it hard to translate what is written in magic books to actual movements. With a dvd of the material with you while you read will help in that translation. Some writing styles will be better then others for you, but there will be a curve on how quickly you are able to process that material.

Hi Andy! If you would consider changing "most" to "many", I'll agree.
Jean Hugard was an Australian who was not only a fine magician, but also, could write clear, concise sentences. In his old age, retired off the road, he wrote and published "Hugard's Monthly" for years. Many of the top magicians contributed to HM. There are many fine books, now which specialize in card magic. RRCM is still in print, after 50 years. Paul Wilson's DVD should be very helpful. When the OP has "digested" RRCM, I would recommend Harry Lorayne. O

Dick I stand with most because I would consider all people and not just magicians.

Yeah, Dick - I've written quite a few books JUST FOR HIM.

My main "thrust" when writing, not only my magic books - also my books on memory training - is to MAKE THEM EASY TO UNDERSTAND...nothing ambiguous. That's where my dyslexia helped - I write as if everyone is like me. Again, easy to visualize, no ambiguities. But I'm betting RossJ27 never even heard of my books. Oh well...

The answer as to how you read a magic book is, read it slowly and with wonder.

Turn off the radio, and TV! --especially if it's a book on the the techinical or psychological aspects, like a "move" or presentation. If, for example, it's RRCM or BOBO, I do not have a pack of cards or a coin in my hands! I read the entire "trick" or routine, completely. THEN, I try to visualize the "trick" being performed. If, at that point, it's a basic principle, like a "DL" with cards, or an Elmsley count, I will grab the cards, and try it. Usually, if it's a principle, or a move that's new to me, I go back and read through the material with deck in hand, following the moves, step by step. --The same, if it's (to me) a new "trick". The reason that I put "" around the word, trick, is that a trick only actually exists while it is being PERFORMED. I didn't say "effect" either, as an "effect" is what the spectator sees, or thinks that he sees!

Sometimes it's nice to see in a DVD how to do a transition rather than just reading that you need to do it. I guess that comes with experience though..?

How do do tricks I learn just from video tutorials, and from the books I learn the theory, as written at Ken Weber book.
And about the "How to read" he said, just with a pencil and you most take your own notes. |
