I think that when you "leave out" your own creativity because you want to "force creativity" on the viewer, that is a cop-out. By injecting more of your own creativity, you actually foster more creativity with your audience (in this case, viewing magicians). Magic, as with all art forms, build on what came before. Musicians listen to good music and say: "Hm, what if I changed the cords a bit and create a different song?". I think Cody was missing the essence of magic, which is entertainment. Props and moves really mean little unless they are put in the context of good entertainment. The other thing, is perhaps a good lesson for developers going forward. The project was not designed with the users perspective in mind. It doesn't even follow good basic communication rules: Tell them what you are going to tell them (briefly), then tell them (full performance and detailed explanation), then summarize (key points). The reason this is even more important in a magic video is precisely what you said earlier. We are not going to use 100% of what is on any project. So, let us know what is on the project so we can decide what to focus on. Some developers have really mastered this. Look at Mark Mason releases. You know exactly what you are getting, he gives you a sample performance, and he explains it very well. Sometimes he doesn't even need to summarize because he has done the first two so well. KJ |

So Code Red was filmed long ago. It was my first time in front of an actual production studio and no matter how "prepared" you think you are, you're not comfortable. Compared to Rift, my E material, and my new stuff about to be released, you can tell I was not in my comfort zone at that time. There's a lot of material gimmicked and impromptu, as well as nearly self working and knuckle buster's on there. I probably shouldn't have mixed them, which resulted in mixed reviews. A lot about me as a magician has changed since then. Ive been in front of a camera more times than I can count, I've learned more, I perform shows, and that will obviously help and show through in future releases.
At the time, and I still do for the most part, feel like we are given to much information about what goes around these effects to make them our own. People love bands who cover a song, but not many love cover bands. If I sold airplane parts to airplane design engineers, wouldn't they be able to use them as needed? |

I bought this from Penguin a couple of weeks ago and the DVD arrived this morning. I've had access to the streaming/download version since I initially placed the order so I've already watched it through and really like what I saw. There is some very powerful, visual stuff here that can be incorporated into routines to really give them a boost. Great stuff, thanks Cody (and Penguin).
