I have a little over 40 minutes so far of solid and diverse material for my parlor/stage mentalism show. I've been working very hard on this for the last 9 months. I am considering adding a 20 minute hypnosis segment to take the show up to 1 hr.
Please keep in mind I've recently discovered and am becoming interested in comedy stage hypnosis and I know this type of show requires 1hr minimum. I'm considering the possibility of adding something like this to my current mentalism show as a second half, giving me 2 hours (with a short intermission) That said, I'm asking those with FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE in this area for any pros/cons of doing a 20 minute demonstration with 1 to 3 people using amnesia, (not pseudo) lies/truth, etc. My priority right now is to finish my 1hr show. Next year my goal is to add the 1hr hypnosis segment. If it is inadvisable to do a 20-min comedy hypnosis segment of the likes stated above, I will continue on with developing 20 minutes more of mentalism material. You're thoughts and advice are appreciated. Thank you, Bobby |

My advice is not to do it. You will be better off waiting until next year when you add the second act to make it a full show, giving hypnosis the time and attention it deserves. I'd focus on using the final 20 minutes of your mentalism to lay the ground or set the stage for the upcoming hypnosis second half by talking about conscious, subconscious, influence, suggestion, which you can demonstrate individually in the first half and then state that in the second act you bring it all together with the the hypnosis.

In my experience, 20 minutes will fly past with three people on stage and you're unlikely to even scratch the surface of what you have planned and imagined.
Bear in mind that the 20 minutes you have planned in your mind would need to allow for failure and a good deal of flexibility. You would have to run a longer 60 minute standalone hypnosis show, several times with the aim of honing everything down to a tight but flexible 20 minutes. Also, making sure you have the right people becomes even more important the less people you're working with. Only one person and you're facing additional challenges. Even if you do manage to find the right person AND get the best out of them by selecting the right routines to demo with them, you might find you struggle with the believability factor. If audience members think you've worked with the person prior to the show, then everything else in your show gets called into question. Of course, if you're already well known as a hypnotist and have a proven pedigree with the specific audience you have, then a lot of this changes, however I think there are very few people posting on this forum who fit that category. |
