One of the nicest takes I've seen is Dr. R's move where he has a coin in CP which is tapped twice with the fingers of the other hand. On the second touch, the take takes place My question is a little embarrassing ... what is this move called ? On the vids I've seen, he calls it the Roth or Ross move; can't quite make it out.
Also, if you are reading this Doc R, firstly I want to say how much you've helped me over the years; clearly one of the top teachers in the biz. A quick question if you don't mind: when you steal the coin, is it pulled back into the hand using the thumb, and/or the middle finger, then place the coin in fingertip rest ? Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Cheers |

It is called the R.O.P.S. move. I think it's stand for Retention Open Palm Steal. It's found on his Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights.

The R.O.P.S. move allows you to steal a coin out of your hand as it is closing into a fist. It saves the need of doing a pass, and is the basis for much of my retention technique. It is based on Al Schneider's Snap Back vanish. During the steal the coin is held against the second finger with the thumb. As the hand closes the thumb moves upward and the second finger curls inward, the coin finishing in fingertip rest position on the tips of the second and third fingers. It's kind of like a slow motion snap. Not too many people have taken the time to learn this move, outside of a few like Chris Korn. I teach it on all of my DVDs, as well as its many applications. Thanks for the kind words about my magic.

Dr. R, thank you for taking the time to answer my question personally. When I first watched your magic, I immediately thought that this is someone I want to emulate. Many magicians seem to rush through parts or all of their routines - something I've not seen in your work, nor Mr. Roth's or Mr. Ammar's (my 'Big Three' choices for top coin men I much prefer smooth, relaxed, deliberate yet natural movements than a lot of hand waiving and awkward looking hand positions e.g. JW grip, but that's just me.
The ROPS move is amazing, one of the best retentions out there, and is something I'll be practicing hard, as it is clearly an invaluable tool. Now, I just have to ask Santa for the Coinvention DVD set so I can study your Stealth Hanging Coins routine Big fan, thanks once again for your time. Cheers |

I don't think that routine was done on the c oinvention dvd set, just on the NYCMS dvd series. However, there is an article you can read on our website that teaches a few applications of stealth palm. You have to go to www.newyorkcoinmagic.net and hit the tab I think for current events. Then look for the article from Magic magazine. It has a writeup of stealth palm with some uses, as well as a great routine by Roth and a surprising four coin production by Gallo.

My mistake Micheal, I meant the NYC DVD's but for some reason my fingers confused the two! Thank you for the link, I'm heading over there asap.
This is the only site I know of where the top pros actually take the time to help out the amateurs. We are incredibly fortunate to have such a resource. Hmmm....I wonder if there are other endeavours where this happens ? You pros are so helpful and generous with your time, you'd think you were all Canadian ! Cheers |
