I was practicing the other day, and I came up with a new and, I think, vastly improved method for the center tear. I will describe the effect. I would like to know if you think this trick is marketable.
Spectator writes down info on center of the billet. Folds it not two but four times. The billet is torn and then torn again. The pieces are burned and the performer begins to make notes on a notepad. The performer reveals the information. This does not use the usual method. No umbrella move. The pad does all of the work. Plus at the end you end up clean. Every move is perfectly natural and thought out. Could also be done where spectator writes anything they want anywhere on a business card. Imagine this: a spectator draws any picture on the back of a business card. Folds it up as far as they can (3-4 times), and you burn the card. Performer takes out a pad and immediately is able to draw the picture. I never did the center tear because I was afraid I would get caught. Let me know what you think. How much would you pay for this? By the way, it is fairly easy to perform. Construction of gimmick under $10. Jeff Blum |

I won't mislead you or try and be funny, but with a little practice there are any number of ct's, and other moves that will accomplish this, some are cleaner than others, but all are workable and do not require a gimmick. If it works for you, great, but to be honest, there are easier ways to do what you are doing, without the gimmick.

Hey Jeff,
I agree with restlessplots. If it can be done without a gimmick but just with a little bit of hard work, why would you use one? There are so many methods to get a word out of a piece of paper. If you don't want to use a CT (I don't), use a peek. They are easy, clean and undetectable (if done right). And besides, don't fall into the mistake of "I've thought about this today, I'll write a pdf and begin selling tomorrow". I speak only for me when I say this, but I only buy books (or effects) of people that I know who are out there performing in the real world to real paying audiences, and the effects they sell are tried and tested many times before they even think on selling them. That's why I don't have any problems pre-ordering stuff by Banachek (for example) before reading any reviews. I know he only sells stuff that works, tried and tested sometimes for years before he starts to sell them. Just a thought... Bruno M. |

There is always interest in a new, well-thought-out method.
Just make sure it is: 1) new and 2) well-thought-out before asking $$ for it. - Greg Owen

I second Greg Owen's opinion. Especially in a routine where you have to acquire information several times in a row, it might be nice to use different methods (one covering the other).
The search for better methods is an endless quest. The big disadvantage, however, is that this quest leads us away from investing energy in our presentations. |

Doesn't the fact that it is folded FOUR times and still ripped twice mean you will need arm muscles like Mr. Universe before you can attempt this move?

This isn't your target audience. It would sell very well with the right marketing, but that's true with just about anything.

Ive been busted before on the CT but what the heck....my TT flew in the air last night, slipped bacause of the powdered sugar I had poured in it.
I love the CT....hate it when they say I'm peeking....it's what you say afterwards though....some make their living on this effect (signature). Now if there is a better way to disguise the "moment of discovery," please lemme know...Ive tried all the distractions, etc.... WC

No one has mention this here yet, but I think that was Dai Vernon the one who came up with the idea of use a note pad as camouflage. Maybe I’m confused...
Anyway, is great that if you found a solution for your problem with the CT, just keep performing it in real situations and lets us know how does it works along the years. |

I think anything can be sold (to the right people). I would not buy it . Although I am curious about what it is you came up with. If you are afraid of getting caught, then learn a better method as you tear it , then get rid of the whole thing (including the center) in the fire or what have you. If that still doesn't suit your fancy then give up the idea of doing a center tear at all. I am not being a wise guy I'm just saying if it doesn't work then don't do it. The center tear is one of those things that if you hesitate or are afraid of getting caught ,then you can count on getting caught.
But what you have come up with may be very clever and interesting so don't give up working on it. If you find something that's your own hang on to it. It is not easy coming up with original things , no matter what any one says. It takes a lot of thought and work so if what you have here is original , then congrats. I would love to hear more about it. Oh yeah one more thing..original does not always mean it is practical..so keep PRACTICAL in mind. Think about the condition it can be done under and angles , spur of the moment and things like that. Good luck
THOUGHTfully,

Sell it on Penguin Magic. Market it well, and they'll do the selling for you. I think.
