Hi was wondering what you guys would recommend to read after the basics...ie. Corinda, Anneman. Specifically i was wondering if you guys had any recommendations on any writings on the presentation of mentalism as such. As far as i can tell there seems to be:
1. The real psychic 2. The fake psychic (i.e. 'i cheat') 3. The bizarrist/occultist 4. The pseudo scientific (i.e. NLP,body language and all that) Any advice? |

Some other books that you should follow up Corinda and Annemman should include "Peek Performances" by Busch (the best book on information gathering), "Stunners" by Becker (best source for learning many new methods and strategies/subtelties), "My Way to Mentalism" by Binarelli (the first three chapters), and "Paramiracles" by Ted Lesley (pay attention to reading between the lines as well as reading and re-reading what he has actually wrote. His reasoning for doing what he does is the key information you want to glean from this work).
As for presentational works to study, Bob Cassidy's "Art of Mentalism", "Art of Mentalism Two" and his four booklet series "Principia Mentalia" are MUST reads for you. They will help to provide you with the ground work to becoming a successful mentalist and to enter the dark side away from mental magic. I would also recommend you reading all the works of PUNX as it too will show you how to elevate mere tricks into entertaining performance pieces. Something that many miss when trying to make the transition. Boring mentalism is easy to do, entertaining mentalism is not so easy. Most of the books by John Riggs also contain a wealkth of performance related material for you in how to impove your presentation plus he has some excellent effects. Harry Anderson "Wise Guy" also contains some of his thinking behind the mental work that he did and is worthy of study by a new mentalist. The Jaz Jakutsch trilogy also contains some excellent examples of routining, staging and presentation not to mention some kick-a** material. After that, throw in "Psychological Subtelties" by Banachek, "Al Koran's Legacy" by Hugh Miller, "Magick" by Jones, and perhaps a complete set of Invocation and you should be set for life. Pointers to good books on mentalism is something that I NEVER tire of! This is one thread that bears repeating. Great list Paul! I would also advice Muttley to search the archives of the Cafe as there are bound to be many other lists. I have had some help from the list on Ian Rowland’s site:

Though at times controversial I do recommend taking a look at some of the new insights, thoughts and revelations offered by Andy Leviss as well as Luke Jermay

Thanks for the mention, Craig! One correction, though, my book is Ramblings and Revelations :o) As always, those interested can find out more (including reading a review from Visions' Kep and words about it from Banachek and Shane (the editor of Visions) at my site: http://www.asquaredproductions.com
