Hi all.
I'm about three months plus into my journey with coin magic. Love it to bits. My friends to whom I perform to, tend to get very logical/intent on figuring out what I'm doing. So I think my hands must still look very suspicious, on top of the usual they feel intellectually challenged, they're my friends etc. Question is: How can you tell when your hands look suspicious? How do you get rid of the suspiciousness? How can you make it look natural? When I practice in the mirror, it all looks good to me. I can't tell when it's natural or not! Cheers, Sam |

I always "break" my wrist when the coins is false transfer to the other hand
I think it will be best if you invest in Tom Stone's Penguin Lecture Tom spend good enough of time on both naturalness of the hand and misdirection which answer all of the question you mention above and by the way, stop practicing in front of mirror.. get a camera instead |

Keep on performing - it is the only rehearsal that really works! It also helps to get you over your "magicians' Guilt".

I try to look at other people and see what they're doing with their hands, their gestures, how their body moves when they talk, then I try to copy their actions while doing sleight of hand.
You should also work on your patter, the things you say while performing, because if you stutter or use too many ummmmm's and uhhhh's then you will seem less confident and relaxed. When I was just starting out I used to practice the sleight-side of routines for hours, but not practice the presentation even once before performing, thinking that if I got the sleights down, then I got the routine. that's wrong. Film yourself doing routines that are easy for you, and then review the video and see where you can improve. And don't forget that starting coin magic is much more difficult than card magic, even though you can get a huge mileage out of just one or two coin sleights, the time it takes to become "natural" with coin magic is much greater than the time it takes to fool people with double lifts and passes. |

What tricks, specifically, are you working on?

When I first started learning coin sleights I would have the coins in both hands all the time when I would go about the day. I would have them in classic palm, finger palm etc as I was using my hands for other things..this helped me to see what my hands looked like naturally..it also allowed me to get used to having them in my hands so I would not be self conscious about them when performing a coin effect.

What I was taught, was if I was learning the retention, to just put the coin in the hand and not make the move. Do it time and time again. Then you want to mimick the same action making the move. This works for any put, take, or placement kind of move.

Use your own movements not someone else.
Years ago, I took group lessons from Slydini. I can't be a very good Slydini, but I can be me. For instance it fits my character to talk about hand shadows before using the JW. Adjusting my glasses can be a way to show my palms empty with out shouting, Hey nothing here. (when really I have 27 coins there/sleight exaggeration) For the same reason, I might use a slide whistle or play harmonica with my nose. I get a laugh a noise and no nothing here. Harris still with palms of aluminum foil, for a lighter touch in coin magic "As seen on The Ellen Show"

I've done/am doing most of what has been advised (thanks! more effort needed probs) except for the video-ing. |
