Hi Guys,
I'm relatively new to this, so please forgive the pretty generic and open ended question but I'd like a trcik/ small routine where I hand a selaed envelope over to a spectator and then the contents of the envelope happens to be true or a correct prediction etc. Off the top of your heads do you have any reccomendations. I only ask as I have a mates birthday at the end of the week and being new into mentalism he wants me to do something, same with my brother inlaw at christmas - I quite like the idea of handing a sealed greetings card over with "Not to be opened until christmas day, or your birthday" etc and then incorperating that into a trick - any suggestions? Thanks Russell |

Hi Russell,
I would start by working out what you are trying to achieve, and then work out a method as there are countless variations of this. Do you want playing cards/newspaper predictions/words/countries etc? It's very difficult to recommend anything without some parameters. Simon. |

Hi Simon, thanks for your response.
Yeah I know what you mean to be honest, sorry for the vagueness - for some reason I'm stuggling to come up with what I want to achieve - bit like a writers block on this particular trick. I guess a word would be good, or a prediction of a selected object. I've done a newspaper test a few times and I also put my own little twist on newspaper test recently using a catalouge book but my method for these uses larger crowds and works better on stage. I was searching for a sealed prediction book test, but not having much luck - but something a long those lines. |

Hi Russell,
How about a Christmas themed effect. You send them a Christmas card several days before. On the day have a Christmas gifts catalogue , have someone select an item from there. They open the card and you've predicted what they would want for Christmas? Simon |

This is actaully along the lines of what I did. I told the audience I used to make a random christams wishlist by flicking through a catalouge book, but instead of doing that, I'd like to use the whole audience. I recreated the randomness of flicking through the book by having all the pages (previousuly) torn out of the book, and used the whole audience to get to an object, much like Colin McCleod's newspaper test. I guess I could do this again, but might have to come up with a cleaner method that works in a more close up situation... I'll keep playing with that idea, and looking for others. The best part is my mate who's brithday it is, used to do a bit of magic so is pretty sceptical... I'll keep thinking about it.
Thanks for your efforts |

Richard osterlind's magazine test could be adapted for this, and make a nice clean selection of a Christmas present.

Hi Simon,
I think I know the method you mean, think I've read about it somewhere but will do a little more reading and try and work out how to adapt it. Any other suggestions would be great. Really appreciate the advice, Russell |

Hi there, russellajallen, do you want the spectator to the envelope and read it himself? If yes, then, why don't you use the method from MIND by Lee Earle? If you have it.
There's this trick in which you take a picture of your spectator and you write something on it, then you seal it and give him to hold until the last day. IT's a very nice and easy method. If you are happy with opening it yourself, then you have 1000 (and counting) methods of switching envelopes, billets, photos, anything. You can predict anything, just think about it, and you can do it! For example what I did for a birthday: I predicted the exact gifts he recieved and who had brought them. For my anniversary with my girlfriend I had the same idea like you. Last sunday I gave her a bottle, with her name on it, containing my prediction of what gift she would give me on a slip of paper. Tomorrow we will open it, and I am very excited.

Try Al Korans Insight Spectacular found in Al Korans Legacy by Hugh Miller, you write the prediction on the card and you put it in his possession at all times yet you can predict anything from the gifts he will get to what will happen at the party even before it happens. Another alternative look for ideas in Annemanns Mental Magic there are heaps of predictions in there.

You could do one of a variety of T&R card routines where the corner of the card is used as a receipt. Send an extra, smaller envelope that says, "Do not open until Christmas!" (or whenever you plan on seeing them) in with their birthday or Christmas card and have the restored card in the extra envelope. On the day you want to spring the effect, do the card selection and tearing and have them keep the corner. Totally dispose of the torn card pieces (i.e. burn them of flush them) and then have them open the envelope. I realize this is a magic effect and not mental, but it would be very impressive.

I forgot about this last night, but if you really want to do a sealed prediction a great resource is Ken Dyne's Future Visions.
