I'm open to all possibilities but as always I'd like proof and so should you. Things don't become more real simply because you want them to be. As always in these type of matters we have a whole band wagon of folk who are willing to accept anything without anything even resembling proof. You can use all of the verbal gymnastics you like but the bottom line is that there simple is no evidence of any paranormal behaviour. There are many unexplained things but because they are unexplained doesn't mean that we can automatically decide that are paranormal. Don't like my tone? Fair enough but I'm a bit tired of so many pseudo-intellectual discussions that remain basically unchallenged. There is a degree of scientific illiteracy that runs rampant in our culture that really needs to change. This is why the Food Babe and Dr. Oz dominate the airways because people just want to believe something, anything without any critical examination at all.

To a large extent, I agree with your skepticism, but when you say there is NO evidence you are simply ignoring evidence that doesn't meet the "extraordinary" level that most skeptics appear to demand. "Evidence" is simply anything presented in support of an assertion. This support may be strong or weak. The strongest type of evidence is that which provides direct proof of the truth of an assertion. If we were to look at the evidence for psi in legal terms, the current evidence meets the civil standard, I.e., proof by a preponderance of the evidence. It does not, however, meet the standard required in criminal proceedings- proof beyond a reasonable doubt. But, yes, there is plenty of evidence in support of psi. You simply don't find it persuasive. Others do. And, I suggest, that doesn't make them ignorant. |

You're quite correct in that I don't find any of the evidence persuasive. I would suggest that most mainstream scientists would state likewise. The argument may also be logically correct but the validity of the premises false and therefore so is the argument. I'm open to the possibility of PSI/Etc. and my only dogma is that I want substantial evidence before I plan on changing my opinion. That is science that is peer reviewed, controlled, double blind studies and so on. I also don't believe that I'm absolutely false and to be fair I don't really think you believe that as well. The use of ignorant obviously wouldn't fly in any real scholarly discussion but this is the Magic Café and so enough said about that.

A recent survey in the UK indicated that twice as many people believe in ghosts (55%) v. god at (25%). Belief in little green men came in second at (51%). Both interesting and disturbing numbers depending upon your own beliefs.
