Paul's "live" lecture is one of the best penguin lectures to date, that I've seen - you got to give it up for the man. I love this style of magic, this is the way forward and something I planning to do in 2015 (Sit down set). Ordered my copy and with two weeks coming up "HOLIDAY" this and Justin Highams illogical dribble force I will be a happy man. As a student I just want to say thank you for giving and sharing the knowledge.

Magic is not the suspension of reality, but the expansion of possibility, inviting us to question the limits of what we believe to be true.

An excellent set. Both spectator and magician foolers here.

Something to be aware of if you get this. There is a performance video included. This is not readily apparent from the Penguin description page. It's not even obvious after you receive your DVDs, which is teaching only. Instead you have to go to your Penguin account, where your various purchase videos are stored. From there, when you click Learn, you'll be presented with the performance video, and not the same video as seen on the two included DVD's. I don't know why Penguin isn't making this more noticeable.

Thanks for pointing that out! I was completely unaware of that!

The only way I found out was by reading a comment to a review for the set, or I wouldn't have known myself. Also, in addition to the performance video, there is a PDF included that is basically the artwork for set, and a track listing of the various performance routines. I guess so you can print it out for a DVD sleeve or something. Definitely handy.

Darn, I actually bought the DVDs from someone here on the Café so I don't have access to the performance video and pdf. I don't see why everything couldn't have been on the DVDs.

Where can I find performance (not explanation) of the last effect on Disc One? It doesn't seem to be on the Penguin download, unless I'm missing something -- and that's entirely possible.

Not all of the effects have a performance video.

If you read Wilson's blog post (linked above) he explains why he didn't include performance video on the DVDs. It seems since he filmed the performances at the Penguin studios, they probably have exclusive rights and get to add it to those who purchase the DVD from them. But from what I understand from Wilson's explanation, he scrapped the performances so the DVDs could focus on teaching the effects thoroughly and help magicians develop their own performance that is unique to their own style.

To those that own Killers, I'm wondering if I'm missing something. The set has some great stuff in it, but there's one effect on the Penguin performance video (the first effect - Wild Card) that isn't included in the either of the two DVDs. Anyone else wonder about that? Do you know where the explanation for that can be found?

I wondered too where the explanation is for that first effect about Wild Card.

Is the instruction of C3 (Con Cam Coincidencia) on the Killers DVD different in any way from the original separate release from Art of Magic (link)?
If so, how do they differ? |

Paul Wilson, it would be great if you would come onto the Café and set all of the records straight on this Killer project - there are just too many questions. |

I have the DVDs from Penguin (and the video download that came with it via my account).
Looking at the link (posted years ago) by Enders Game, that's to a totally different "C3" and not Con Cam Coincidencia. As for the Vanishing Inc. "Killers" it looks like it's a download of just the DVD recordings, and not the performance video. The trick list is shorter on Vanishing Inc's and that's the only thing I'm not sure about. From the list, it looks like the only effect not listed on the Vanishing Inc. page is "Luck vs. Skill" which is a clever update on Chad Long's Shuffle Lesson. The other things at the end of the 2nd Killers DVD are not effects, but some utility moves and advice on some of the psychology behind some of these effects. Those are nice, and useful, but you can certainly do the effects without that advice and moves. Given the price difference between the Vanishing version and the Penguin, perhaps the Vanishing Inc. one doesn't have that last effect and the additional utility moves and advice. As for C3, the explanation on Killers is good, but very straightforward. If you learn his instructions, I'd then very much recommend watching the various Shin Lim performances of C3, which are the same exact effect, but with some performance tweaks. I don't know if RPW has taught C3 elsewhere as well, but given that it's a pretty straightforward concept, and the real fun is in the presentation, I'm not sure there's much you need to learn about actually pulling off the effect -- you just have to figure out which performance you want to do with it. Shin Lim's performances of C3 very much influenced how I do it as well, as a few things he did make it a bit more fooling than Wilson's straightforward explanation. Overall, Killers is quite good and I find that I'm still using effects from it years after I bought it. |

I'm writing this review for the Mad Hatter... he's too stressed to write on here at the moment.
He told me to say that this is a fantastic release by R. Paul Wilson. The ACAAN alone was worth the price of the download at Vanishing Inc. or the DVD at Penguin. The downfall of course was that The Mad Hatter did not get to see R. Paul Wilson performing these effects for real crowds and pick up on all of the subtleties in action. Nobody at the tea party thought that it made sense. Some of the routines are gambling routines, which do not interest us much but Mr. Wilson's thinking is still interesting on those routines. Mechanically he is a simple thinker, but his framing behind all of the effects make you feel like he did nothing. There is some minor memory work with numbers on one of the effects that will take some more practice than you might be used to on "self-working" routines but it is so worth it. This routine too is worth the price of the DVD. Mr. Wilson is without a doubt one of the greatest thinker with card magic in this century. I think that this is 10 out of 10 and it is, in my opinion, the real "ultimate self-working card tricks". I'm surprised more people haven't bought this and reviewed it to be honest. |

Great review Gavin! Killers remains one of my absolute favorite DVDs ever, and I have ended up using nearly all the effects on there at one time or another, especially the two you highlighted: C3 and YAMFACAAN. I've pretty much given up on all other ACAANs since YAMFACAAN is so easy and impromptu.
Two small notes: I bought the DVD a few years ago from Penguin, and if you buy it that way, you also get a performance video. It's weird, because you get the DVD with all the instructions sent to you, but included in your Penguin downloads is... just the performance video (not the tutorial videos -- those are only on the DVD). Relatedly, for years I though that the Killers download on Vanishing Inc. also did not include one of the tricks on the DVD, because it's not listed on the page ("Luck v. Skill" which is a fantastic update of Chad Long's "Shuffle Lesson" that completely hides Chad's method, which always felt too obvious to me). I also thought that it might not include the extra handling tips and tricks (including a pretty nice false wash shuffle). Neither "Luck v. Skill" nor the "toolkit" are listed on the Vanishing page for Killers, so I assumed they weren't include. However, in Gavin's review, he shows the download listings within Vanishing, and it appears that both *are* included. I have no idea why they're not listed on the Vanishing product page. But it's great to see that they are included. Given that, it's totally worth getting it on sale, even though with Penguin you do get the performance video too... |

FYI - I acquired this a couple of days ago as a part of one of Penguin's "5 for $99" offerings. Considering it's usually $39.95 and Penguin gives immediate access to the performance video (which, again, is not on the DVDs), it can be a good deal for anyone interested! It looks like the deal is still in play as of Saturday morning PST.
