I know this probably shouldnt be posted under latest and greatest, but I'm looking for anyones reccomendations on magic for my christmas list. hopefully a lot of the new latest and greates products will be mentioned (hence why it got posted here). I'm looking for really killer stuff here if possible (really visual/magician killer type stuff) big fan of mark masons stuff I have triception and double deception as well as some other things from him. ive got axel hecklaus just a cup but havent started working on that yet. I'm looking for some good ideas basically of stuff that doesn't suck...its really hard in the magic world to see a descripttion of a trick or a video and think OMG this is the trick to end all then upon purchasing it finding out that it sucks...trying to avoid that here...so any and all products suggested please take that into consideration, I get that its personal pref to a point on most of this stuff but thanks again guys for reading this and putting up with me! let the suggestions begin!

FWIW I have recently moved away from most of the gimmicks and am focusing on tricks I can do with ordinary objects -- cards and coins mostly. As an amateur, performing mostly for friends, family and colleagues I find most of the gimmicks I have rarely get used - -I love the effect, carry them around for a bit and find myself forcing a situation to show it off -- whereas with normal coins and cards I can do something spontaneously fun whever I want and the moment seems right.
Last week, our plane was delayed and so while sitting in the United Lounge I took out a deck of cards and just started practicing -- false cuts, shuffles etc to pass the time. My 2 companions said, hey show us a trick -- I did OOTW and the loved it. They wanted more so I did a poker test which got a good reaction as well. I look up and there are about 10 people standing around our little table watching -- I tell everyone truthfully I am just an amateur "screwing around" but happy to try a few more things. I did a simple one coin routine with a FD and RV -- nothing hard and got great reactions. As I look back, while things like the new Water Bottle trick, or SoundsAmazing or the various smoke gimmicks all are really fun to play with they make no sense for me in most situations -- please note if you are a pro they make a lot of sense since you carrying props is part of the deal. So my Xmas list is Killers by R. Paul Wilson, Self Working Miracles etc. I am intrigued by Imagination Coins but have to ask myself will I really carry it around all the time? Even packet tricks, which I love, seem forced -- the only one I carry around a lot is ESPerfect because it is sooooo good and having separate ESP cards actually makes some sense to me --- oddly I can work it into my job (don't ask). |

A couple that pop into mind are Poker Test 2.0 and Balance which you can order from Eric Ross.
Maybe a bill change like Extreme Burn or Extortion too. Those all range in price between $20.00 and $40.00. A nice card to wallet would be good also but they can be more expensive. Maybe you should give a price range. |

Thanks for the responses so far guys! I do some gimmick work, others just normal cards so anything goes!!! also prices can be anywhere from 10-100$ id guess unless its really killer and more expensive....

I'm thinking of asking for Tool by David Stone. I know it was popular when it first came out, but I'm wondering if anyone still actually uses it? I know that it has lots of uses, and I could probably show family members a cool trick using the gimmick within a week of getting it. |

The only trick I bought that I could basically perform right away and still use all the time is Industrial Revelation by Jamie D. Grant (it's $125, but it's a very strong trick that I'll probably do for the rest of my life). Almost everything else I perform requires a lot of practice, creativity, etc. Flash by Chad Long is another good one. Stand up Monte is great but takes some practice to memorize the routine. Those two tricks along with Axel Hecklau's just a cup would be practically all you needed to do strolling/table hopping magic. |

Stand Up Monte is worth the practice, I use it a lot. So many magical moments.

Personally I would get a good book. I actually have two that Im pretty sure my wife will be getting me this year. One is the Definitive Sankey 3 Volume Set (I'm actually pretty excited for that.) And the other is High Caliber By John Bannon. I don't have either but I'm pretty sure I will find them this Christmas.
I would recommend Approaching Magic by David Regal, its a wonderful book full of effects ranging from close up, cards, coins and mentalism. Definitely a good read. So me personally, I would recommend a good book as you will get more value for the money but that's just me. Happy Holidays. -Bobby |
