Hello everybody it that time of year Christmas is around the corner. I was wondering if any body has a holiday trick that they enjoy to perform. I am interest in learning a few. So if you have seen a good one or performed a cool Christmas trick and are willing to share I would appreciate it.

I assume you are thinking of next year, since it is way to late to learn anything for this year.

In early October, you made three posts in 15 minutes in three separate fora. (New to Magic, Grand Illusion, and, I can't recall the third without searching.)
Your were very unclear and relatively unfocussed. Some of us made an effort to clarify and offer suggestions, etc. YOU DID NOT BOTHER TO RESPOND. A few days ago, you finally responded in this forum. (Vide ut infra! "How to Start and Stop a Show".) You were given some more good advice by Oliver Ross, and I chimed in, too. You more or less apologized and "sort of" thanked those who had given advice. I offered more advice, and pointed out that I was glad you had apparently begun to understand. YOU HAVEN'T RESPONDED TO THOSE POSTS EITHER. You were apparently concerned with doing a show at your high school in a few monthe. And, you have no show. Now, you're back with a totally new topic. Again, with an impossible deadline.as 55 Hudson has pointed out. I was willing to forget the past and try to start over. But, now my patience is at an end.

Dear Dick Olsund
I was able to pull over a show I sold out in a auditorium with 750 seats and added 100 more chairs in the isles. I performed for and hour and made a profit of just around 1,000 dollars. I am sorry I didn't respond to any over the post from back then but I was feed up with everyone and just went on by myself. And the deadline might be impossible for you but I think it is reachable for the idea that I am using the trick for. So unless you have a trick to suggest to help me, Please refrain from bombarding my topics with the same stuff. I GET IT I MESS UP WITH THIS WHOLE MAGIC Café THING If you feel the urge to reply to one of my topic that dose not help or actually reply to my topic please Privately Message Me |

I don't think he realizes yet that he's hurting our industry more than helping. I can understand if he want to add ONE trick to his show for the holidays but NOT to start from scratch. I wonder, he said he sold out his auditorium show, great, but how many of those people will go see another magic show?

Hi Kabbalah, and Charlie!
Gene Anderson, and I had a discussion at Abbott's GTG a few years ago, about, "commercial". We decided that a simple working definition of "commercial" would be: "They will pay to see you--AGAIN! Yup! I agree! He still doesn't get it! --and, it's extremely doubtful that he ever will. When I was working, it was always tough to follow a "magician" who had burned the territory. The bureau manager would send me in to square the beef. I'm telling a few of those stories in the book! Thanks for your comments! There is still "hope for the world of magic"! Most of those who come here to the Café, have the right attitude. Best... O

Dick, I may have missed details on this, and if so, I apologize. But do you have an ETA on your book? I will be first in line.

Oh dear, so RobbieSales, You've just made over a grand and sold out over 850 people? Yet you're asking people to build you a routine, and then you're just plain rude to people trying to help you learn "properly", it's no wonder people get fed up. As an aside, really Dick any news on this book? I really enjoy your posts on here.

Thanks for the posts guys. I was actually collecting a couple of effects to help this person.
But now I recall Al Schneider's separation of Clown Magic, Theater Magic and Virtual Magic. I am not willing to give a sharp knife to a suicidal person. Sorry Robbie ... in person I might be able to help. Mentoring onLIne just doesn't work.

There seem to me to be a couple of things wrong with this type of [original] post...
Firstly that the poster fails to demonstrate any willingness to do some work him or herself (but in my reading, invariably, himself). At least the suggestion that you have had a think first might help to get a more positive reaction from others on the Forum. Secondly that the reactions give it too much credit: he surely isn't expecting to learn to perform a substantial illusion in a couple of weeks, because if he is, then he is delusional (tee hee, puntastic). So why not dignify it with the answer it deserves: how about Invisible Deck while wearing a Santa Costume and shouting "Ho, ho, ho!". In truth, I really like the Invisible Deck, and its a really powerful effect but even that needs proper practice and time. If my post seems irritated, it's because I am. I think the Café is a really amazing resource, but there are too many people misusing it, posting inanely in order to get to the magical 50 posts so that they can eavesdrop - because that's all they are really contributing - on magic secrets. There are loads of resources out there that fulfil the 'need' that they claim to have, and this isn't what the Café is meant for. Honest requests for advice on what to read, research and learn are not the same as, hey tell me a trick. At my current rate of posting, it'll take me ages to have 50 posts, but I'll have read a very many more books before then, and I'm very happy with that. I am extremely grateful for the advice I have received from people on here, about what to read, what to look into, et c. Now back to Tarbell... |

Jay my Café ranking should be inner circle by now for how long I've been on The Magic Café, but I only post things when I have something to say, not that Café ranking interests me in the slightest.

Robbie, if you can't take the advice of someone with the performing experience of Dick Oslund, why don't you take you $1000, go to a magic shop and spend it all on holiday themed magic--there's a lot of variety available--and do your show that way? I intend this with all sincerity.

Hello, I don't come around this section of the Café very often and I had not seen the other "Robbie_Sales" posts some of you are referring to, but I see absolutely nothing wrong with his post in this section.
The guy is simply asking if people know some "cool Christmas tricks" and if you perform some, to let him know what they are. A fair enough question in a place like this. Some of you are implying the guy wants to learn a "substatial illusion", while others are suggesting that it's too late to learn "Christmas tricks" when the guy posed the question on the December 4th which leaves him plenty of time to learn a few "Christmas tricks". Not sure I get what's going on here, but whatever. It's the Café, a great place, yet often very weird as well. Well, I'm not annoyed with you yet, Robbie_Sales, so here are a couple of suggestions I'm aware of: - Christmas Surprise by Wild-Colombini - Magic with a Christmas Theme by Marc Dibowski - Christmas Present Trick - Tel's Bells - Presents of Mind by Samuel Patrick Smith - Christmas Carol Book Test 2.0 - James L. Clarke - Visible Santa or Visible Christmas Tree - Magic Christmas Stocking (Change bag)

How about the old Christmas tree from green and red construction paper. I thought about it while picking up books at a library branch prior to one of my shows. It happened when I found a book on Christmas Crafts. The rolled up papers to tree, was not in the book, but my mind got triggered by the title. I got some red and green construction paper from the librarian, and substituted a 3 minute segment in the 2nd 3rd of my show. It was in the section I called the Simplicity of Christmas. Also included was the dancing of an old wooden dancing toy to the tune of Little Drummer Boy. The top of the tree fell off, unexpectedly (and because it was years since I made one). The kids loved my error. As I stared at the broken tree..I thought...hmmmm improvisation time. We went from tree, to Star War Light Saber...to baseball bat (hey this was a Kansas City Royal Town)...to... from somewhere in the nearly normal brain of Harris aka Dr. Laugh still learning that Schtick is as important as Lick. I've made up custom sets of 8 Card Brainwave cards for various seasonally themed magic club meetings. Think of having 8 different images which represent the holiday in question with image on four of the backs and then a different image on four others. An example four Christmas would be faces with a wreath, advent candles, a plate of cookies, a wrapped package, an elf, a reindeer, a snowman, and a candy cane. The backs could be a decorated christmas tree without snow and one with snow. Set them up as four the standard 8 Card Brainwave handling and go for it. I put them together using Illustrator and InDesign because I have the software and the graphic design skills to do so. You could also just use four blue backed and four red backed blank faced cards and apply the images to the blank faces with stickers which should be fairly easy to find. This could be done for any holiday theme that you might need.
