To what extent are the new tricks people are selling on popular websites rehashed versions of older tricks? Some of my purchases, I've noticed, have basically taken old effects and added scripting to it.

Uh oh, you said tricks!

The new trend is taking old effects and mixing them with a presentation you can find in occult texts or from Llewellyn Publishing and selling them in limited edition at a high prices to mentalists.

Almost everything you see on these sites is based on or an extension of other ideas. If you're serious about magic or mentalism at all, buying these singular tricks is almost always a bad idea.

I find it is quite rare when people come up with brand new, never before seen methods but this is not always a bad thing. You have the likes of Pete Turner who has taken lots of older, well known methods and yet he manages to bring out new ploys and displays of mindreading which blow peoples socks off. I think there can be a lot of benefit in reworking old methods but don't agree that people should just take someone else's idea, methods - put a new script to it and call it their own - their own invention.

A particularly worrying new development is people taking other creators effects and routines, stringing them together in a new order, and selling them as a new 'routine'- usually without any permission.
I recently had the misfortune to purchase exactly such a 'routine' from a Magic Café member. I read the e-book in disbelief so blatant was the absence of anything remotely original within. |

Hi Martin, agree completely. That's why I always wait for the reviews, wasted too much money on latest miracles.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

Totally agre with Mister Pulman.
All older tricks (forgotten by magicians and mentalists) are recycled... |

To what extent can a magician claim something as his or her own when it's stolen from a non-magic source? Richard Wiseman has quirkology videos on youtube that I'm fairly certain was taken for at least one of the effects produced by a famous seller (will not name). I've seen people on the forum getting mad when others take ideas, but when does it really matter?
