When I studied law at a basic Grade 13 level, one of our units was devoted to Edward Greenspan and we did a field trip to Toronto to see him in action in court. It was a murder trial. I don't remember the details but I knew we were observing a titan of criminal law.
Some have called him the best who ever lived. Goodbye for now, Mr. Greenspan. Congratulations on an unprecedented career. |

Good philosophical question. I think many people are not "worth" defending, but society as a whole benefits from their vigorous defense.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

Anyway I do not know about who was worth defending, but perhaps Latimer was a sympathetic client: Robert Latimer: Greenspan represented the Saskatchewan wheat farmer who was charged with first-degree murder in the 1993 death of his disabled daughter, Tracy, who had cerebral palsy. Latimer admitted to killing his daughter to end her pain. The case sparked a national debate over euthanasia. In the end, Latimer was convicted of second-degree murder.

He also hosted one of my all time favourite television programs. It was called The Scales of Justice and Greenspan analayzed different criminal trials throughout Canada's history.
He would explain the laws pertinent to the trial, and breakdown the respective strategies of the prosecution and defense. It was a fascinating program. |

Greenspan was a curious figure in Canadian legal life. He was famous for his public commitment to justice, but he was, in practice, lawyer to the wealthy. Greenspan defended publicly loathed figures like Conrad Black (Publishing magnate, and public dick), Karlheiz Schreiber (German industrialists many suspect of bribing former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney) and the like.
On the other hand, in the 1980s, Greenspan temporarily suspended his practice to publicly support the abolition of the death penalty. He has publicly spoken against "tough on crime" measures because they are ineffective, and lobbied for greater public financial support for Legal Aid. Early in his career, Greenspan defended working class people accused of serious crimes; this likely led to his strong position on capital punishment. In Canada, we're suspicious of heroes and try not to make them. Greenspan was legendary for his intellect, his deep understanding of law and his commitment to the integrity of the justice system. But we often disliked the company he kept.
