Hi guys, just thought I'd share this for some who may not be familiar.
This item was first published in the January 1978 issue of Apocalypse and it is one of my alltime favourite coin moves. It's an 'instant, visible, never-out-of-sight switch of one coin for another'. Its a short, sweet utility coin move that just might remain in your arsenal forever. Killer Kaufman! |

Thanks for giving a name to this. I've used similar techniques for many years and they are impressive.
A read of Al Schneider's material on the Basic Vanish will give some alternate hand positions. What will be missed on the video is that because of a couple of Psychological ploys the human mind will "See" the coin in the air as it falls. Thus, this move does not have to be a "Switch," but also away to get "one ahead" or prepare for a "one behind" and more.

Thanks. You do it well.
I devised the sleight at 14 years of age in 1972, but didn't do a lot of coin magic so can't ever remember using it in a routine. |

Thankyou for the compliment, Mr. Kaufman. Very much appreciated.
And thankyou for publishing this great move all those years ago. I'm using it for Roth's Torn Coin right now. (Thanks for publishing that too) |

Funsway is right. This move has many different applications. I wonder if it could even be done directly into the spectators hand. Just a thought.

If you had them immediately close their hand upon the coin falling into it, they should have a good surprise when they open it. I like switches like this, and I do an open-hand switch that is quite stunning, deceptive, and very clean & magical. I just pick the coin right up off my open left hand and it changes (without cover) at the fingertips, and then immediately the hand(s) are shown clean with just one coin. And I agree with Mr. Kaufman (Whose work I greatly admire)…Nice video, looks good. -Mb

Very deceptive, nicely done. Is this written up anywhere besides The Apocalypse, which I don't have access to?
As far as doing it directly into the spectator's hand, the idea is to have them close their hand as quickly as possible or use some sort of misdirection as the switch is made. There's a pamphlet that was published quite a while ago--and I can't remember the name of it--that has a copper and silver routine in the spectator's hand where the spectator is first conditioned, twice, to close their hand as quickly as possible around a coin being thrown into their hand. On the third throw the coin is switched. Maybe someone knows what pamphlet I'm referring to. |

I also have one where the audience expects a change to occur in their hand but it is revealed that the coin has vanished all together. But, the real "right answer" is to be prepared for the time when your VA will demonstrate that level of responsive control. when that "magic moment" occurs every performer should have a trick up their sleeve to execute. You may wait years, but then .... PM me if you wish to discuss such things

One of the problems with the sleight is that the angles are not the best. That makes it great for video (I must have seen the future!) but less so for live performance where you're working for more than one person.
If the spectator is too tall, or too close to you, he can look over the top of your first finger and see the clipped coin. If you're going to do it into a spectator's hand, make sure his arm is stretched out so his hand is far from him. |

I'm just saying...Another thing to remember with this move and indeed all of this as to the use of sleights, is that the actual move is not the only part of the dynamic. So in a somewhat static mode, perhaps the angles might kill you, but in real time, with all the other movements happening, a large part of it all flies right pass the specs realization. I have found this out in a lot of moves where you think that specs might see something because you see it or feel it or think they see it, only they don't behind all the rest of what's happening as you present. I've tested this out for years and believe me, it is pretty much as I say here And in general, it is when something is done "mostly" poorly that it is more greatly detected, or something like that.
All due respect to other, perhaps even greater, opinions.
