Hi Tom--the stainless Busby/Fox set sold for $475.00 plus the 23% Buyer's Premium. That comes to $584.25. I paid a lot more than that for my set a number of years ago. This set had Mike Rogers' name engraved on them so this may have stopped some buyers who wanted a pristine set. Those are, by the way, the heaviest cups bar none I've ever handled. You can almost curl them like dumbbells.
I'm not surprised the this RB set went for $900.00. When you add the Buyer's Premium, it's pretty much what you would pay for on the used market. I think that those collectors who desired original RB cups already have a set, so if the price seems a bit low to you, it's probably because the demand went down a bit. |

Yes, I hadn't factored in the other bidders. You're dead right. Speaking of cup weight, aren't the van Dokkum stainless steel cups heavier than the Busby's? Perehaps not. And speaking of so called Charlie Miller (Magic Inc) cups, my set has a special sentimental value for me. They were my first "real" cups. I paid $200 for them (pristine condition); bought them off Ron Allesi. Up to then I had only known those flimsy, wafer-thin aluminum ones. You sneezed and they keeled over! But the Charlie Miller/Magic Inc cups were an epiphany. Still remember vividly what a sensation it was to take them out of the package they were shipped to me in. The weight was something else! Squat, sturdy little tanks. Only downside is that, like the RB cups, their saddle is not the best for stacking regular-sized balls. Tom : I think I was the one who started the thread you're referring to. It was a crazy time for cup prices back then (actually not that long ago when you think about), especially for vintage cups like the RBs and the PF/Danny Dew cups. Fortasse |

Yes Fortasse--it's unfortunate that the RB and Charlie Miller cups lack sufficient attic space for stacking 1 inch balls in between. You can feel the crochet balls resist you when you stack the cups. I tried a set of the RNT 7/8 crochet balls and they fit perfectly but look too small for these cups.

Leo, I used to say about the JB/PARIS-HILTON stainless that not only could you perform a cup and ball routine, but get an upper body workout at the same time. I did not like the "sharp" saddle though.
Fortasse, it may have been you. When I saw $2000+ and 3 bidders on the Bertram cups, I thought I had a chance. That style of cup is not my favorite. I also owned a JB/PF copper set. Then I bought my first PF/DD set and was amazed at how light and thin they were. |

Hi Tom--those PF/DD cups felt light and thin because they were spun in .040 gauge copper or brass. The current PF cups that Donnie manufactures are spun in .050--a bit thicker. This does not apply to the PF Vintage Specs cups that Donnie also makes now. The PF Vintage Specs cups are also .040 and according to Donnie, the thinner gauge allows him to spin a sharper edge around the saddle--"just like Danny made them." The metal had to stay thinner than .050 to correctly duplicate the original design. The vintage brass PF/DD cups feel even lighter and thinner to me than their copper counterparts.
The RB and Charlie Miller cups looked ugly to me at first, then their design slowly grew on me. |

Yes, there was a type 1 PF/DD. I owned a set for a while and I think they were, as you said, even thinner. The type 2s were a slightly better design and metal.

There were a great selection of cups in that auction. I watched it 'Live' and think there may have been a technical glitch at the crucial moment on the Connie Haden lot. Someone may have got a bargain!
Regarding the Bertram cups: they looked like a nice set but didn't come with the distinctive handmade bag that originally came with those sets - so weren't entirely complete. That may influenced the final hammer price. There were a couple of lots that contained a doze or so sets (some great individual items in them), so if they were bought by one of the dealers we may see some of these up for resale in the next few weeks.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

I remember J.P. asking me if my Bertram set came with the bag. Now I understand why he had asked me that because he had a set without the bag. This could have indeed kept this set from crossing a thousand dollars. I watched the auction live and don't remember seeing any bids for the Connie Haden cups. It was...strange.
Those are nice cups Fortasse. The Charlie Miller cup by Magic Inc. looks well made, yet it too has that seam running across over the bead. Both of my CM sets have it and the ones I've seen in photos also have it, including John Carney's set. |

I didn't bid on anything that I already had. I'm surprised the Haden cups did not sell, though. I didn't stay on for the whole auction.
