I bought Jheff's "Heads I Win, Tails You Lose" at the October Mindvention. I just finished reading it for a second time, and I can warmly commend the book to performers interested in Equivoque and related approaches to verbal forcing.
Much of the material in the 80 page paperback book is not original. Jheff stand on the shoulders of Maven, Knepper, Hilford, Banachek and others, but a significant amount of original reflection pervades the project, and it features a range of specific effects that verbal influence (done well) makes possible. Jheff acknowledges that Equivoque is more often done badly than well so, early on, he features a composite routine in which the performer makes ALL of the typical mistakes. This, then, provides the backdrop for Jheff's understanding of verbal influence in mentalism, with chapters on forcing one of two, three, four, five, or six-to-ten objects. Several chapters, only slightly outside of of a focus on Equivoque narrowly defined, explore approaches to B'Wave, Pateo, psychological forces, and others. In Jheff's primary vocation, he is a high school English teacher. In this book, the insights well taught; it may be occasionally pedantic, but it is a welcome relief from the books in our field that are written by people who only think they know how to teach. Potential readers would want to know that Jheff does not teach his readers how to "wing it" in performances. With (especially) Docc Hilford, Jheff teaches scripts that one needs to learn, and rehearse; in response to each choice by the participant, the mentalist needs to already know what to say next. As a rather thorough and comprehensive discussion of verbal influence in mentalism, "Heads I Win, Tails You Lose" may take the place of the one we never really had before! Strongly recommended: 9.5 George Hunter |

I agree. Subtle differences make or break an Equivoque sequence. Jheff provides you with those differences- the "how" as well as the "why". This old dog even picked up a thing or two. Recommended.

George:
Thanks for the kind words about the book. A small correction: Much of it is indeed not original, but there are a few key ideas which I feel are. It is those ideas which, for me, make it much easier and much more effective to perform the technique. Tom: The book is available on my website in both hardcopy and PDF form. And I've been bringing hardcopy versions to the Elders meetings for the past few months now. - Jheff

I just got this. I'm so glad I did.
I thought that, with Max Maven's Multiplicity DVD, and the extensive work offered by various mentalists in specific tricks (such as the variants on Free Will) that this territory was already well covered. Well, I believe that this complements the Multiplicity set perfectly. Each is brilliant on its own: together they are encyclopaedic - great learning tools - and highly practical. As Pit Boss says, with this technique the small details are what matters. Jeff gives a variety of scripting examples that help you nail this oh-so-easy-to-get-wrong tool. Of particular value is his scripting of mistakes: it brings alive the errors we've all made in our early exploration of this principle, then corrects them with the correct scripting. Use his wording, adjusted for your own personality, and you cannot go wrong. Jheff covers working with from 2 to 11+ objects, one from 52 cards, and links to other tools such as those in Banachek's trilogy. He also gives great insight into Roy Baker's PATEO technique. As you would expect from Jheff, he is generous in his crediting, and provides a fulsome bibliography. It is also well written: I enjoyed reading its 81 pages in one sitting, and will be going back to it many times. Magician or mentalist, you'll find a use for this. If you have hesitated over this technique, this will put you right. |

I really enjoyed this too. In spite of Jheff's admission that some of the content is not original, it never felt like a straight re-treading of old ground. The original ideas Jheff contributes are well worth adding to one's e*******e repertoire, and the discussion of other ideas was always thought-provoking. Read in conjunction with Maven, Hilford, Quinn et al., this is a very worthwhile contribution to the literature.
This is a particularly favoured technique for me, and one which Jheff's excellent book has served to strengthen in my performances. |

I have tried over the years to pick up most everything involving Equivoque, and after reading Jheff's "Heads I Win, Tails You Lose", I can say that there are a few ideas that I was not familiar with along with some nice thinking on some of the methods I was familiar with.
I think Jheff has put together a good book that is definitely worth adding to any Equivoque collection. |

I was recently invited to do another radio show. I normally don't do the show in the studio as I prefer to call in, but the host and co-host invited me to be there in person so I said "YES"....
I was warned before hand that the host was the kind of guy that would try to debunk folks by grabbing the cards or looking into your pockets or otherwise just trying full on to catch anyone out if possible ( Fortunately, All of this was NOT TRUE in this case) However... it made me think... What do I do? What do I perform? I must remove all gaffs!!!!! Of course I regained my composure, put together a plan of impromptu, propless type effects and calmed down .. I'm hoping there is a treasure trove of these kind of effects. It sure is a confidence builder!!!
