Hi there,
I was just wondering if anyone here has purchased Andrew Mayne’s first book "Voodoo Box" in the "Illusion Impact Series”? I'm interested in hearing any thoughts on this. Is there much point in purchasing it seeing as it's so similar to the sword box? I read on the FAQ on his site that it has a few twists on the classic sword box, hopefully it's more than just using umbrellas haha What's everyone's opinion? Thanks, Mike J Rogers

Andrew Mayne’s Voodoo Box arrived in the mail today. For a fast and inexpensive illusion, Voodoo Box has a lot of potential. I should be gathering the necessary pieces in the next few weeks. I’ll post more after I get it built and tested.

Yep I have one.
I recieved Andrew Maynes Voo Doo Box from http://www.weirdthings.com in the mail two weeks ago and started looking at it. I read it probably five times just because I liked it that much. Mr. Mayne not only gives you method but he gives you the answer to why it is done like that for every portion. He adds little touches throughout the book/booklet that make the illusion reach its full potential. I will definatly be using this effect. The numerous pictures and the clear text make it so anyone can follow the instructions and it comes with performance also! I definatly give this a great review and I can honestly say and effect like this that can be done surrounded and the box inspected if desiged can be worth its weight in gold in the proper situations and for the price that its going for it is a must read, build, and use. Hope my review is helpfull. Take care, Kyle |

We took a box and found a nice piece of music added some lightning and rain effects in the background...went to a dollar store and found 25 umbrellas.
We speak about the bad luck that is associated with someone opening an umbrella indoors...We use a plant to open the first umbrella and introduce him to Mr. Box. I also cut an umbrella in half and hold it from the center at the end and use it for the top centre penetration. Please note that this only applies for the umbrella at the top centre...the rest of them remain ungimmicked and fresh from the dollar store. Whilst you are there, be sure to purchase a bag in which to transport your rain protective apparatus (umbrellas) Try and use black ones as this will give you a better look onstage and make the box seem more full of holes in the blackness.I suggest that you add four additional umbrella penetrations at the top to give your illusion some lift. I would also encourage you folks to spin the box to give a complete view of the box. Choose two more folks from the audience to share in the bit of bad luck and then place them at each corner behind the box. Rotate the box 90 degrees as each side is penetrated. Don't forget to spin it around completely twice when all of the umbrellas have been inserted. IF you cut an umbrella in half, it is a very simple matter to hold both pieces which make the umbrella look ungimmicked....insert the point and draw it up as you insert only the handle in and raise the pointed portion up behind the handlshaft. We also had the plant don a white t-shirt with holes which is then shown after his exit from the box.... Have fun with this wonderfully entertaining bit of strange. |
