Seriously. Did he??? I met Mickey Silver at the New England Magic Competition a bunch of years ago, where he took First Place in Close-Up and Markus & I took First Place in Stage. Markus had known him for years prior to that, but I was relatively "new" in the magic world so that was my introduction to him. That day was my first experience holding one of his silver dollars for a photo with him (you know...). Then a few years ago we were both attending the Conclave on Cape Cod, where he blew my mind again. Although he wasn't part of the cast/crew that year, Mickey gathered an enormous crowd performing his coin work in the lobby (before he was run off by the powers that be, haha!). Anyhow, a big group of us retired to our room which kind of doubled as an informal hospitality suite, and Mickey continued to absolutely floor me and everyone else through much of the night.
Maybe it was my glass of wine, but all I could figure was that to do what he does with coins, is physically IMPOSSIBLE. No other answer than something supernatural. His skills are out of this world. So it continues to thrill me no end that Mickey Silver will perform for the Oceanside Magic Invitational convention on Cape Cod for the 2nd year in a row. If you have seen him, you know what a treat this will be! If you haven't seen his coin work yet, do not miss it. Mickey spends most of his time in the Las Vegas area these days so OMI is a relatively rare opportunity to catch him in action. Visit www.OceansideMagic.com for info on Mickey Silver as well as all the other fantastic stars that'll be shining at OMI! And...lest you ask, YES, you are "invited". Hope to see you on Cape Cod in April!

I believe I remember seeing him at Gary Darwin's in Las Vegas while I was there-- Not knowing who he was, I spent most of my time with Allen Ackerman (great times!). Mickey definitely would have been great to spend time around too. Wish I could see him perform live.

Mickey certainly is one of a kind alright. He's as good a coin worker/magician as there is anywhere, and dynamically better than most others good-better-best that I have come across on my journey.

Mickey has a very deep understanding of what makes a spectator tick, and how to effectively fool them. Just got off the phone with him...he is a very accessible and nice guy! I wouldn't be where I'm at in coin magic if it wasn't for his help early on.

Count me too, as a Mickey Silver fan. We don't really know each other, but I was fortunate enought to see him perform live a few times in Massachusettsas when I followed him around as he lectured in Watertown and Peabody.
I learned a ton from him just by paying close attention to how he "prepares" his audience.....they don't stand a chance...he's amazing! Chuck

I thought I could do a decent retention vanish...until I saw Mickey Silver do one. Nothing has inspired me more to work on moves until they cease to look like moves than watching Mickey Silver.

Did Mickey Silver sell his soul to do what he does??? I'm not saying he did or didn't, but has anyone seen Mickey's reflection in a mirror? |

I remember long ago now, chatting with a magician tending the counter at Tannen's when it was tucked away on about 25th street in NYC… He showed me his retention vanish (the basic method, I think shown in Bobo's), and declared proudly that he was told that he had one of the very best in the world. It was pretty good I guess, but when I started to more deeply appreciate the deceptive move, I came to realize that it really was nothing special and most decent magicians could make it appear about the same because of the physical nature of the move. But then I came across Mickey Silver, and a whole new appreciation came forth that has since then not been eclipsed by anyone.
What Mickey has done with this move, has progressed it doggedly forward from what your average magician has used it for. Mickey has made the move, the magic, and has wrapped himself in it as the conduit to show its deeper secrets. The basic move is not that hard, even done poorly it can still fool people. Done well, it is a killer vanish, perhaps the very best of all. Mickey has expanded the psychology behind it greatly as my old friend here, evikshin has pretty much stated above. And Mickey is as much important in the magic as the move. I've never seen it done so magnificently, unforgettably, magically as Mickey has shown it to be. Have you???…And I ask this of the big, small, and all of us here...

Well, to each his own, and I've actually seen a couple of these guys do their thing where a RV was used. All I can say, if you watched all 3 of them do their thing with it, and then watched Mickey Silver, you'd better realize what I am saying here…And so would they, and anyone else witnessing all 4 of them work it.
I'm just sayin', and thanks for your view of it.

If you had seen Harvey Rosenthal's work on this when he was a younger man, you might have a different opinion.
As you say, to each his own.

Well, not for nothing here, but I did get to see Harvey Rosenthal a bit when I used to visit Tannen's many, many moons ago. A wonderful close-up magician indeed. Alas, though he was younger back then, he was also quite older back then to me as well. Still, he was very good and I sorta remember seeing Frank Garcia back then as well. I didn't mean to disparage any of these old-time wonders as to magic, they are to be respected and their works appreciated. Just that uniqueness does not always have to come from the past.
What I see and speak of as to Mickey Silver here is a uniqueness that I believe, any of these old-timers you've mentioned would recognize easy enough. Much in the same way Dai Vernon saw enough in David Roth to proclaim him the best coin man he'd ever seen, or something like that. Though I'm sure others at that time might've felt differently as to their contemporaries. Hey, suppose Harvey Rosenthal had seen a Mickey Silver back then doing what he does now…Think he would've been impressed? Personally, I think he would've been blown away by the likes of more younger guys that were sorta just like the big 3 you mentioned as to closeup, like Chris Kenner, Homer Liwag, and maybe an Eric Jones or two (Who are more all like each other than not). To me, Mickey Silver is noticeably-enough very different. Just the same, as you say that I said here…"To each his own." Good talk.
