Hi everyone - as you might have guessed from my forum name I have an interest in magic and music! I've dabbled in magic tricks for quite a long time but always found something got in the way of me practicing. I'm getting on top of it now and and am practicing card handling things. Its very clumsy at the moment but I'm getting the hang of it I think! One thing that put me off magic a little in the early days of my trying was all the gimmicks. I don't know why, but I'm over that now! I have recently bought a number of effects to practice with and have surprised myself with how easy some things are to make look good. I'd love your suggestions of online videos books/dvds to look at to get my basic card skills up to scratch. Is the royal road to card magic a good one to look at?

Firstly welcome to the magic Café Mujician, Its nice to meet you.
I would say in your request for suggestions that you can't go wrong with Royal Road to Card Magic as a starting point in your learning, It's considered a classic text between magicians for as long as I can remember. If you want a more wider exposure to card magic and non-card magic stuff then I would recommend Mark Wilson's Course in Magic which is another classic text in it own right. For Coin magic I would say get a copy of Bobo's Modern Coin magic. In closing I would give the advice of hitting the books and not the gimmicks and maybe supplement your learning with a DVD or two and stay off youtube. Good Luck Magically Aus |

Hi, welcome to the Café. I too would suggest the royal road to cardmagic as a starting point. You can also get it on DVD but I would get the book and use theDVD to supplement the book and aid your studies.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

Hi Mujician and welcome.
You have already received some good suggestions. One more that I do not see often recommended, but might fit your needs well, is Roberto Giobbi's "Introduction to Card Magic". It is a free ebook that is available from a number of links. What is nice is that it focuses on basic card handling, self working tricks, psychology, and presentation. Though it does not have slights, it helps you to feel comfortable with the cards by relearning what you assumed you knew (shuffles, deals, cuts) and then adding some flashy alternatives too. There are also links to video clips to aid learning. It is very basic but is well written, detailed, and a fantastic jumping off spot. |
