I can't even remember the last time I used a pay phone. Do you know where the nearest pay phone is to you right now?
If I were to agree with you. Then we would both be wrong. As of Apr 5, 2015 10:26 pm I have 880 posts. Used to have over 1,000

If I were in NYC I'd know where many were. Approx ten percent of those would work.

I don't remember the last time I used one, nor can I tell you where one is near me. When I travel I am amused to find that most hotel pay phones have been removed and there is an empty box on the wall where they used to be.
As an aside I will reluctantly admit to a crime. When I was about 12 years old my friends and I were checking public phone money return slots and came across one with a loose side panel,.We removed it, and in the process of tinkering with the insides we inadvertently made an electrical connection across two brass nuts. Jackpot! Coins came pouring out. The phone was on the state fair grounds, and over the course of the fair we regularly visited the phone and cashed out. Eventually it was fixed, but oh what a great week for a couple of young boys! With the passing of pay phones, stories like this are heading to the "Tom and Huck" category. |

The last time I used a payphone was about fifteen years ago in America. They have been gone from here for a long time, as far as I know.
The last time I used a wind-up phone connected to an exchange was around 1980. I believe it was the last in the country.

They've removed the last of the pay phones on Pearl Street (pedistrian mall area) in Boulder to discourage the homeless from hanging out there.
Last pay phone I saw was in California at Tijuana border crossing. Lots of folks using it to call for rides. On related note, growing up in 1970's my grandparents had a party line...was always a surprise to pick up receiver and hear other folks talking...

Your GRANDPARENTS?! When I was very young, I remember our home having a party line. I don't remember much other than it was like everyone in the neighborhood had an extension phone on the same line.

Probably when I was in middle school.
The last time I actually saw one was when I drove up to Mount Wilson, high up in the mountains overlooking Los Angeles - nothing but an observatory and a whole bunch of radio towers up there (along with the most stunning view of the area you can get without being in an airplane.) I'm guessing the phone was because you couldn't get cell service up there, which was ironic considering all the towers standing 20 feet away.

I see them here now and then, but I can't remember the last time I used one.

I can't recall.
All I know is I'm paying about $10. a month (month after month) for a track phone I use once every three months (and it takes 3 minutes to find a signal). What a savings over that 25 cents a call stuff. LOL Oh well, I do keep my phone cleaner and I can call from my parked car (I bet). Good question acesover. I'll be trying to spot a pay phone now instead of driving (Those pay phones cause distracted driving.) -Mary Mowder |

Yep - a good chunk of the NYC pay phones are gone but the ones that remain will most likely be converted to WiFi hotspots.
These days talking is more or less free - most cell phone plans come with unlimited nationwide calling. Too bad most of my contacts usually have very little to say. |

Out here in SanFrancisco/Bay Area; you might be lucky to find a few in the transit stations. Also at the airports (Oak and SF). But that's about it! Lynn

The last time I used a payphone was when I went camping at Colorado Bend State Park where no one has service. I used the payphone at the Headquarters and I couldn't dial a out of town number!

I have to pay for every phone I use, cell, home phone bills ect. Now the last time I used a public pay phone was about 15 years ago, I have had a cell phone since 2000. There is a real Superman can change in it phone booth less than 5 miles from my house, not sure if it works but it is there.
