I am in the middle of thinking about re-branding myself to eliminate references to MAGIC and MAGICIAN and move towards just advertising as a Mentalist or Mind Reader etc
When I first started performing professionally, I was still mixing a lot of card tricks with my mentalism. I still think there is nothing wrong with doing mental magic but I now only perform mentalism effects. As I still use Magician in my advertising, I am finding that I have to get over the magic (almost apologising that I am not a magician) before I get to the performance of my mentalism! So I thought I'd check what a few of our prominent UK Mentalists advertise as - and I was surprised! Atlas Brookings - Magician and Mind Reader http://www.atlasmentalism.com/About.html Looch - Mind Reader Magician - http://www.looch.co.uk/ Marc Spelmann - Paranormal Magician and Mind Reader - http://www.marcspelmann.co.uk/ These are but a few of our BIG NAME mentalists that advertise as magicians to the general public. I know there are other guys who do not use magician anywhere such as Scott Creasey but it seems far more of the UK Mentalists are happy to be magicians. So what should I do? Ditch the magician moniker or embrace what our other mentalists do and be a magician - although then having to fight against being a magician or be seen as doing mind magic? I hope this brings some thoughtful discussion!

Over here in the UK no one knows what a mentalist is. They also don't search for a mind reader, they unfortunately search for a magician. When you want to make money and generate an income performing you have to make a compromise. Luckily the people I perform for know me and remember me as the mind reader. I don't get refered to (at least not to my face) as a magician.
If you want to get gigs David, you're going to have to embrace the 'M' word unfortunately

Yea I thought as much Looch. Just find that at wedding fairs, have to work extra hard to get over the magic part. I've even met brides who said they would never have booked a magician but they would consider me.
Wonder how many don't even approach the table because they see the m word first?

It actually depends entirely on "how" you market yourself. If your goal is to get gigs through Google search then as Looch has said, you need to use the word "magician" just to get any sort of search volume. However, if you are marketing through face to face contact ie wedding fayres, entertainment agents, then I would strongly suggest NOT using the term magician at all, there simply isn't any need; you want to be different from the other 1000's of magicians.
It's interesting because my marketing has changed completely this year. For the last 15 years I've had the domain http://magic-man.com, despite doing only mind reading for the last 8 years, and for a good many years I've ranked well in Google and got a lot of gigs. However, my situation has changed completely this year and I've now got more time and opportunities to get face to face work and so I've completely rebranded myself as "The Mind Reader" and removed all references to the term magician. Fortunately, I also managed to acquire the perfect domain too. Personally, if you have the time to market yourself face to face to potential clients then I would recommend doing the same. You want to stand out, and being a Mind Reader is tricky because your clients really need to experience it first hand to know how different but still how entertaining it can be. Regards Andrew |

David Thiel has some great thoughts and opinions for this exact topic in his outstanding marketing book which I highly recommend:
http://www.magicpendulums.com/the-market......ist.html He is essentially of the mind (pun intended) that using the word Magician in your marketing will get you more at bats and gigs. This is what I've always done, same as Looch and Marc etc. People search for Magician - hopefully call me - and I can then sell my skills as a thought reader.

Thanks for the responses guys. I am coming round to the idea of using magic and magician in my advertising but eliminating any pictures or blurbs about card tricks etc

For me the M word only appears on my YELP listing and in SEO for my site + in the categories used for Gigmasters and GigSalad. I also mention it as part of my background from when I started going to magic stores with my dad when my parents divorced, and performing for kids in the mid 1970's.

I agree with Saysold, check out David Theil's book as it specifically addresses just this issue from someone with a lot of real world experience in these matters. His solutions may shed just the light you need. Plus, like everything from David, it's a great read.

I quite conquer with Looch,I used to publicise myself as a Paranormalist as you can see by my username on this forum, but no one know what a Paranormalist is. I now sell myself as a Mind Magician. I still do pure mentalism not mental magic as many dealers sell. Here in the UK the public only know of magicians or possibly psychics when they wish to engage you. I realise you don't need any title but this is what people search for when they go on line. It means either getting the booking or not.

Depending on what angles you're willing to use, "psychic mind reader" would certainly get people's attention. You could argue that the word "psychic" is as big of an attention grabber, if not bigger, to the general public than "magician".

If you want to be found online you should rank for ALL of the terms people may be searching for Magician, Mind reader, Wedding entertainer, Wedding entertainment, Wedding magician, Wedding Mind reader, Magician for weddings, Mind reader for weddings, Psychic mind reader, psychic mind reader for weddings etc. You need to think of every permutation of every keyword and also do some research with google key word planner to find high volume KWds. Then you need to find someone who can get you ranked for all of those kwds. Then there is geolocation Magician scotland, magician England etc Wedding entertainer scotland/England etc etc You should be ranking on first page for 30 - 50 terms minimum.
Its not really about getting someones attention its about being found by those already searching. You want to rank for as many terms as possible.... |

When I say I'm a mentalist, 9/10 times the first thing people say is "what's that?" And I have to respond, "you ever seen Derren Brown? That."
And still, I get referred to as Dynamo. Worse things could happen, but considering how few people know that what DB does is mentalism, the word doesn't have as big a significance as 'magician'. |
