Hey guys!
I recently borrowed modern coin magic the book. And only have a limited time with It so I am worried I wont be able to read through all of it. I work table hopping and strolling gigs and I was wondering if you coin masters could post some page numbers with tricks you think will work for walk around! I really appreciate it! Thanks, Josh |

You can buy a copy for next to nothing and it will serve you well for years. Give it the time it deserves rather than rushing through it and you'll be glad you did! It's well worth the investment.

A month or two ago, you asked for information on something. I've now forgotten what. I responded, and asked you to PM me, as I had something I would have sent you. You did not bother to PM me. I checked out your website, such as it is, and, even sent you an email. (From your email address on your website.) My message could not be delivered. Your email is/was not functioning. I think that I even responded again to your first post. No answer.
I don't have time to waste.

Dick, I was PMed and told that I was mean because I responded with something that Josh didn't want to hear.
Save your time for folks who really are seeking real advice!

Hi Kabbbalah! Thanks for that input.
He had some sort of comment under his avatar, about not wanting to let strangers know where he lived. I emailed him and suggested he give me the address of a friend or relative. The email wouldn't transmit. I remember when Clem Magrum had retired and was living in Davenport Iowa. He had an UNLISTED number--and complained because no one called him! I believe you are right! Bluesman and, Funsway have now explained, "one more time", the facts of life! S. H. Sharpe said it well: "Those who think that magic consists of doing tricks, are strangers to magic. Tricks are only the crude residue from which the lifeblood of magic has been drained."

Josh, I can tell that you may be impatient when it comes to magic - you posted a question in Secret Sessions awhile back and asked "Anyone?" when no one had responded just an hour later. You're asking for page numbers even though the book has an index.
Magic takes time. My good friend Dean Dill taught me one of the best lessons when it comes to the art: go slowly. Don't rush the moment. Let it build, and rehearse the same way. This stuff doesn't happen overnight, nor should it. Otherwise everyone would do it. I've been working on my Triumph routine for five years and I still find ways to improve it. There are people here who have decades of experience. Listen to them - they want to help you because they've been in your shoes. And you can pick up a copy of Bobo for $1.47 on Amazon - I just checked. That's a journey worth taking. You're not going to summit Everest in a day; that's what makes it an impressive accomplishment when you do. I applaud you for wanting to look through one of the best books in magic. Just give it the time it deserves. To whet your appetite, glance through chapter 5, Quick Tricks, to see some good visual stuff that you'll be able to pick up after not too long, before going back to the beginning and diving into the basics. The book is organized well, giving you the easy stuff first.

Although I prefer a hard copy, there are several places online that an electronic version can be obtained for free
One such site is http://www.learnmagictricks.org/ultimate......m=201003 which gives you a PDF, or set up an account with Lybrary, log on, to to "My account", then under a "Tools" section, select TLPP, and Bobo's original book is available to view on screen

Hello everyone!
Your input is all great! I apologize for my impatient attitude on the forums. I am a teenager and sometimes find my self wanting instant gratification. I completely understand that magic is not just about the tricks I have a large library of magic books and read through them and take notes on improving my performance. To Mr.Oslund I am extremely sorry I never PM'd my parents take away my computer privileges often and that is also why I am impatient to get responses because I worry I won't be able to read them if they are posted later. Thanks everyone for the great advice! My apologies! I hope you all can forgive me! |

Apology accepted.
Instant gratification is one of the problems or our civilization, today. Work on it! "Oh Lord, help me to be patient! --and, please hurry!" When I was a teenager (80 years ago) we had a few books. The Fleming Classics, The Tarbell Course, Professor Hoffman's "series", and a few others. We corresponded by "snail mail" (@ 3 cents per letter). There were a few magazines, TOPS, GENII, SPHINX, DRAGON (!) ETC. We survived, learned, and, succeeded! So, if we did it, with none of the modern conveniences, available today, you certainly can, too! I hope that you are not neglecting your education to spend time on magic. Education is the one "thing" that does not DEpreciate as you use it. The original edition of Bobo is available in a Dover paperback edition, relatively cheap. The "New" edition has a bit more material than the original edition (somewhat like the "Tannen Tarbell", but, there is enough in the original edition to keep you "busy" for a few years. It's good to be intellectually curious. It's also good to practice and improve your presentation of what you already know! "One learns by DOING the thing." --Sophocles (a few millenia ago!)

Dick Oslund is right. I'm in my 60s and back in the days all I had were Bobo and the Tarbell Course and a few books from the library. I read every page of those books. And I knew which trick were on a given page by memory. It was a different time back then.

Yeah, it's all changed. I remember when there was just one magic book in our little local library. I swear, I had to be the only person that took that book out over & over again, as my name was the only one ever on the library card. Those were the days. But progress always lies ahead, good and not so good sometimes.

But, Kabbalah, everyone already knows you ARE mean....
Josh, next time you are about to do something that might make you lose your computer privileges, just think that you could be losing out on an opportunity to get a personal e-mail from none other than Dick Oslund! Listen to Dick and Kaballah, their collective wisdom is pretty awesome, and we are lucky to have people like them contribute to these forums. And even though I respect the heck out of them, I am going to go against their wishes and suggest you take a look at Gadabout Coins. (You might even already know it.) But please, in your impatience, please practice it at least 25 times before you perform it at a strolling gig... |

Thanks for the recommendation Mr.hohman
Don't worry practice is something I don't get impatient with! I love to do it |

Ah, youthful enthusiasm.
All of us older guys will advise you to slow down, and treat books like Bobo's as giving you useful tools to carefully learn and add to your magic toolbelt in a way that you can really learn and re-use the principles in all of your magic. Good magicians are like any other artist or craftsman, and grow as they learn their craft. That said, I'm with Marion and Funsway. The Gadabout Coins is a wonderful classic- I think it's the best effect I learned from Bobo's book. It demonstrates to the magician a large number of magical principles, is a "fun" trick to perform, allows for a lot of personal touches to make it your own, is imminently portable and ready to use, and mostly, is very entertaining to spectators.
