In practicing my card manipulation (prior to performance, a lonely but intoxicating habit), I have time to reflect on masters past and present. Recently, Richard Ross came to mind. He restored within me an unbelievable energy and finely tuned drive after watching clips of of his famous acts.
Playing them over and over again, I'm glad we have footage of his recent performances. My appreciation for his work is enormous. Have any of you met Ross or perhaps watched him perform? Please share your stories with us. Those of us married to Stage/Finger Manipulation would find the stories a real treat. Taken from ONLINE VISIONS: "Richard Ross passed away from a sudden and unexpected heart attack at the age of 55. Approximately a month before his passing, he received a Performing Fellowship from the Academy of Magic Arts and Sciences in California, a last recognition for an incredible performer. Richard Ross leaves behind a legacy of magic for an entire country, and will serve as he always did -- as an inspiration to young magicians everywhere." No magician can think of The Linking Rings and not think of Richard Ross, and his perfect presentation of the classic. At a time when stage magicians were yearning for new illusions, Ross made his reputation by perfecting classics, and selflessly dedicating himself to helping young magicians." I didn't know that Richard had passed away
until recently. I remember him fondly from The World's Greatest Magician's Tour of 1979. I was only 4, but I remember the magicians from being the mischievous child I was then. Anyhow, I feel fortunate that I shared the same stage with him, and my sympathy to his family as well.

At FISM 2000 the highlight of the convention was the banquet (where there was actually food). I was invited to sit at a table with some Canadian and Swiss friends I met at Lisbon. The two seats next to me were empty. Several minutes later Richard Ross and his wife came and sat next to me. It was really neat getting to know him in a social situation. He was really nice and obviously really into magic. I was shocked when he died within the next year.

I saw Richard perform his amazing stage routine in the late seventies. He was part of Richardi's touring magic show. I remember sitting in amazement as he did those rings... suddenly they were more magical than I ever believed. His cards were flawless and I always remember his fantastic ending to the Hummer spinning cards. Silk magic. Card magic. Linking rings and the topper... an out of this world routine done with pocket watches.
It was a class act all the way. And it didn't stop there... the entire company was invited to our magic club and they all joined us for a night. Richard showed a bunch of the guys some of his ring moves and to this date he is the only magician I ever asked for an autograph.... Wow, as I was typing this I decided to check my old scrapbook. The card is still there... it's an Ace of Spades sign by him and next to all my memorabilia of the many times I saw Doug Henning. What can I say? He was an outstanding magician and made a lasting impression in my life. Greg

There is nothing that remains so constant as change. Don't end up like concrete, all mixed up and permanently set.

I offer my belated condolences.
I saw Richard Ross and Paul Daniels perform the linking rinks together at an International Day of Magic in London. I don't know how impromptu the performance was but it was presented as a duel of skill with Richard of course being the eventual winner. Pure, pure magic!! Real magic! |
