I am considering doing a 3 day course with James Szeles in Melbourne Australia as my first live Stage Hypnosis training http://www.szeles.com/training-3/ (thanks to quicknotist for giving me the heads up on the course).
The great thing is it's being held only 1.5 hours drive from my homes as opposed to most which are held on the other side of the planet. I'm happy to travel internationally for training, but this sure is more convenient on the schedule and most likely on the pocket. I can see Szeles has been a busy worker for many years, however after a good bit of time on google I can’t find any feedback on his training. Also all the feedback on his shows is marketing feedback, as opposed to industry feedback. What is Szeles like? Are his show ‘modern’ and ‘current’? Is he a good trainer? I’ve never heard of him before as I am just starting. Do you think he is a good foundation to build my knowledge and get some practical experience from the class? My position is I’m a magician looking into hypnosis for the first time. Spent a month looking through forums and watching youtube clips. I like Ronning, Nongard, Tripp, Jacquin and Savard (in no particular order), not a fan of Royle’s stuff – just feels… a little… well… smutty for lack of better description. Sorry no intention to offend anyone. I’m learning of more and more folks in the field every day. The cost is AU$1500 which is about US$1200. To fly to say Vegas, would cost about US$900 and LA is about US$800 before I even paid for a course. So is it better to choose the only one I know of locally or should I wait to have more choice (and more probably more expense and time spent away)? Any advice on any aspect of the above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I don't know, but I know that any training is better than no training. So I would probably go for it in your position.
I have had the chance to train in Ireland with Anthony Jacquin and Justin Tranz, and they were both completely different. Little overlap. But I learned a huge amount from both. So as a starting point I would go for this. You will also begin to build up a network of performers with similar interests, and that is no harm either.

I've been aware of James for years and have ever heard about him offering any kind of training. Like Tony, any training from someone working professionally for years is better than nothing. He certainly wouldn't be my first choice, but if you're not willing to invest or travel, it could be your best option. Also most that I know have taken multiple trainings and certifications so he could be your first. You will likely leave knowing more than you do now, and it could be a starting point.

Thanks Tony and MP. I've booked in. That will give me some practical experience rather than home learning. I'll know after this if hypnosis is the right fit for me. Pretty sure it will be though. So excited. Now I just need to calm down and wait for the event...

Good onya mfields!
I'm sure you won't be disappointed and I really think your insurance policy in this is Rick Collingwood's involvement. |

Yeah I had a good chat to him. Sounds a nice bloke and he mentioned that it is his reputation on the line too. Why do I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas? I wonder how many sleeps it is...

Just had day 1 of 3 in my live training and I am a little surprised I did not actually do any practical hypnosis. We covered choosing the audience members, what you say in an induction, combining skits, reversing suggestions, basic marketing and contracts. no actual hypnosis done by me. All the other course participants are hypnotherapists and so it seems actually doing hypnosis is considered the obvious easy bit that does not need to be covered.
Day 2 seems to be planned to have watching performances that have been taped to see how it's done and day 3 Sounds like it's going to focus more on the business and marketing sides. I have Norgard's home study course, Ronning's Course is in the post and due any day. I have several books on stage, like Deeper and Deeper and I'm a performer (magician) so I Know about marketing, websites, contracts etc. Szeles and Rick are both nice people and the course has a lot info on stage, but driving home I got the sinking feeling I am not going to be covering much / anything that is not covered in a book or DVD set I've already ordered / have that the combined cost is way less than this live training. So as a result, it's after 2am and I'm feeling this complete "tour de force" "no further training required" course is not actually going to give me the 1 thing I wanted from it, practical experience hypnotising a fellow human. Are my expectations off target? I thought actually practicing hypnosis would be covered in a complete 3 day course. It feels more like a stage hypnosis Module to a hypnotherapy course where hypnotising has already been covered. I will go in early tomorrow err... in a few hours today and have a chat with them. Just to check if I have my wires crossed, about what is being covered. Am I right though that the whole point of live training is to get the practical guidance and feedback on my skills rather than the 1 way flow of a DVD or book? |

Great that they are covering business, marketing and contracts etc. However of course there should be some practical training under guidance. My only guess why they would skip it is that they use one fixed induction and it has worked for them for decades. Maybe they do not see it as important to get you to do it, just say it, it always works kinda thing. Fine with a large room of expectant subjects. It will not make you a flexible rounded hypnotist though.
Speak to them about your concerns and if they are not addressed perhaps you can get your money back. Anthony

Thanks Anthony, I'm heading in early today so I can have a private chat about it before the others arrive.

That's why when I teach it is limited to four students. That way everyone gets on stage and does it. You learn piece "A" why it works, how it works. Then you go onstage and do it. Then you learn piece "B" why it works, how it works. Then you get onstage and do piece "A" and "B". Then you add C, D, E etc.
That's why I only do four students at a time so it can be done that way. By the end of the class, you have done it multiple times. Learned to do it in your own words with your own personality, and are ready to book a show with confidence.

Well I had my chat and it does seem we are primarily covering 1 induction. Tomorrow we are going over personalising it and our homework is Making the start of the show our own and present it tomorrow.
I have to say I really got some good material today as we dissected some shows and it was interesting seeing how each group member was interpreting who was under, when they went under and what skits they would be good for. And a lot of focus on sequencing of skits. Szeles is very engaging, easy to learn from, fun and is comfortable stopping and discussing as needed. It was definitely better than pre-recorded info I currently have In that regard. Networking with others has been enjoyable. I live in a small rural city so I don't bump into hypnotists or magicians much. Would I have liked more practical experience in it? well so far yes I would. But we shall see what tomorrow brings. |

Sorry for the delay getting back to everyone. As I mentioned earlier I have had an injury that has been holding me up a lot. I’ve seen the specialist surgeon last week and we have a plan under way for that over the next few months. So I have spent way too much time in bed since the course.
To answer the question, was there induction practice? Nope. You see everyone else was a hypnotherapist so it would have been like teaching a runner to crawl for them and also Szeles has successfully used just one induction for decades. So it is a say this and they go into hypnosis approach. Rick Collingwood (the Australian guy who teaches hypnotherapy and booked Szeles to come over to Australia) knew I was really badly itching to actually do the inductions, so he has gone above and beyond offering for me to join in on some of his induction classes coming up in the next few weeks. Pretty darn nice you have to agree. So how was the class? Well lack of induction practice aside, it was pretty darn great. Szeles and his wife Paula are just the most down to earth easy going couple you could ever meet. Szeles has tons of great stories and they simply did not have the big I am the star ego. We covered a wide range of topics including marketing and client follow up. Where I enjoyed the course over book / DVD learning was getting to talk with him and really discuss areas I had questions in. Further to this he invited us all to send him a link for our show and he will review it afterwards and in discussions since the course, twice he has offered to skype chat at any time if I need to discuss anything. So the after course follow up is great. So what was covered? We stage setup and equipment, safety, a good deal of focus on pre-induction (setting the scene for the induction). The inductions including annunciation and timing. Routines and order. Reversing suggestions. The kind of stuff you expect really. We also got a copy of his media kit and his contracts, we covered BOR, getting bookings, client follow up and even working with agencies. So we covered a lot of material. As a full time magician I was amazed at the cross over of experiences, especially when he was talking about ways of dealing with the folks on stage, it really was similar to dealing with kindy kids on stage. It was odd to see the hypnotherapists being all funny about the stage craft , dealing with people on stage and managing them through all the skits, while I felt so comfortable with that stuff yet the induction stresses me out. Overall though I am pleased I went. Szeles and wife are simply lovely. |
