There was a story circulating around in the magic world about this story:
A young boy after watching an amazing magic show presented by an old magician, went up to the old magician and said, "When I grow up, I want to be a magician." To which the old magician replied with a smile, "Son, you cannot be both." I heard that this was a true story and if it is, would someone point me in the direction of where its origins are? Thank you |

Yes,I can see the logic to this.
But I don't know where it originated from. |

Zlwin, I read your comment on your website about how children are amazed
And full of wonder, then as adults we lose that. That is my usual response when I'm asked why do you do magic or what do you like most about magic. Out of interest, where did you perform in Japan? |

Blackstone Jr had a quote that I heard him say on TV.. Which he attributed to his father:
"Every kid wants to be a magician.. And those that never grow up become Professionals!" |

I was "surfing the web" and landed here.
The quote is attributed to the late Jay Marshall. I knew Jay as well as anyone, and, it's typical of his sense of humor. I wasn't there when he said it. If I can find the original quotation, I'll post it here.

Much like Dick Oslund, I know Jay Marshall used that line and since the time of his death, and that joke appearing in media stories about his death, I've noticed more and more magicians now using that line.

I recently noticed stand up comedians using the same quote, too.
Thanks, Gerry!!! |

It's a stock joke. Musicians, comedians, actors, athletes all use it. I use it in every stand-up show. It's a gentle, warm laugh. Not a show-stopper by any means. But a nice moment.
