Love this trick! Did for a group of magicians this weekend, and fooled them all!
Can't wait to try this one for laypeople. |

I am proud to announce that Stephen Bargatze's latest release from Palmer Magic, I Hate Card Tricks, has been awarded the Worker of the YEAR from the Wizard Product Review! How cool is that? If you own this, you know how it is totally a closing piece to an evening of strolling magic. Congratulations Stephen on this wonderful recognition. Thanks to David and Sean for reviewing it, doing it and producing a show that is not just entertaining but educational.
Keep well and busy, -shawn |

You definitely need to present this effect with the right premise and at the right point in your set. If you open with this trick, people are going to tune out. If on the other hand, the audience has been having fun with you and on is fully on your side, then you can offer a reason for introducing this "boring card trick" and they'll go along with you.
That being said, you still need to be engaging and funny. To borrow from Juan Tamariz's teaching, this trick by itself has an energy level that trends consistently downward... meaning you need the climax to lift you out of a hole you've dug for yourself! Your mileage may vary. That means you need to be a great entertainer to bring the energy and interest up at every phase to counteract the boring process. If you can pull that off -- get the energy going up and down while still trending up overall -- and then hit them with the climax, you have a real winner on your hands. The trailer cut out the jokes (leaving only the procedure) and effectively "opened the set" with this trick because it wasn't preceded by anything else to bring us onside as the audience. So what people get from the trailer is really the polar opposite of how this trick should be presented! I think that's why the trailer turned so many people off (myself included... I wanted those minutes of my life back). It was Shawn and Stephen's reputations that made me think beyond the trailer and see the potential here if presented properly. My 2 cents. |

Regarding the method, analytical people may find it quite obvious what you're doing to figure out the thought of card. I have a background in math and computer science and so logic is no stranger to me. I found that part of the method transparent. If you know your audience is of that variety, then you may want to address that head on and straight up acknowledge that some of them may be able to see through it "and follow along". They'll stay engaged because they'll be "in on it". That is, right up until the lone card reveal at the freely dealt to position when this whole routine flips from logic to magic.
That's 4 cents now. |

Problem being that specs are handling a blank face deck. There's a very, very good chance that they will flip over the odd card, or take a look when you're fiddling in your pockets. The reason why I'd never perform it.

I think the odds of them looking are pretty slim. If you're paranoid, you could even start the trick with an ordinary card on the face. It would be pretty easy to motivate removing a card during one of the phases thus leaving the deck in the desired condition. |

Have been panning for gold in magic shops for some time now acquiring numerous little treasures and the occasional precious nugget along the way. Then, along comes Stephen Bargatze's I Hate Card Tricks and suddenly my prospectin' has paid off. This is the mother lode. And my new closer. First come the gasps. Then the blank stares. Then the roaring applause.
Thank you, Mr. Bargatze. |

An alternative handling is offered which you can do with a blank deck straight as in I dream of mind reading which I already do anyway . Any comments correct me if I am wrong but someone who owns just told me I was misled in my original posted question . |

You don't have to do a deck switch

This is a good trick.
However, a much stronger effect can be achieved by showing the deck to consist of all blanks before the revelation of the thought of card, not after. Think about it. |

Josh Jay said he is releasing his trick and his presentation was far from boring and the effect the same with less moves a a more logical premise.
