Question:
I did not know where else to post this so here's my question. What is your definition of "Undergound Magic"? Curious minds want to know... Paul's response: Although I abhor the term, I am, I guess, an "underground legend". I say that with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek. If you could see me smiling you'd know what I think of the "underground"! The term has it's roots in the preservation of magic secrets, but seems to have come to signify snobbery and elitism in the magic world. To be a member means to participate in the "secret sessions" where the really "great" guys share information too precious for the hoi polloi. This may not mean that the members are inferior performers, just that they think they are superior people! Some though, have earned this dubious honorific just by not participating regularly in the magic doings (conventions, lectures, etc.). If you do magic well but earn your living some other way, you often have little time to participate in the magic to-dos. And if you are not around much, but are known by reputation, or if you haven't put much in print, because it takes too much time, you become an "underground guy". It seems that all the previous posts have some element of truth about them. Still, I think it only fair that you meet these "undergrounders" yourself in order to decide what really qualifies them as members. Don't be too quick to judge someone based on the title bestowed by others in the craft. |
