Backinblack, I don't know what your real world performing experience is but mine has been people you'd assume to be more intelligent, doctors, dentists, CEOs, bankers etc. are fooled more readily... at least they are quicker to vocalize the fact.
I don't understand how people make wild assumptions like, intelligent people think more abstractly and so on, and then build an assertion from such an assumption and expect it to be taken seriously. It makes no sense. That's one of the reasons why this thread reminds me of the Three Stooges plumbing job. There are unsubstantiated claims sticking out all over the place in this thread. It's all opinion. The smart approach might be to listen more carefully to the opinion of a person who has been at it for decades doing thousands of shows and who also happens to be one of the best in the field. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do your entire show with no clothes, no tools, no props. |

Well, intelligence is the ability to see things more abstract / with more differentiation.. but I agree that there are also other factors like sceptizism etc. who influence the way people perceive things.. a friend of mine said once about the uri geller show: "david copperfileld for poors".. he is both: sceptic and intellectually gifted.. of course only one example - but this sort of person exist.. as I wrote: its all about percentages..
i respect the opinion of mmr, yours and all others who have a different opinion than I have.. anyhow: from my own thinking and perceiving I see it the way I see it.. I think its right both: think for yourself - question authority (t. leary) and evaluate experience.. |

I think Sandsjr is correct. The smarter they are the harder they fall. That's why children can be the toughest audience for magicians. Remember that Gellar fooled all the men of science.
...what if I could read your mind?

"knowing your audience" used to be easier when having a high school or college degree indicated a common level of learning.
"intelligence" is fractious (now 11 different types) and not always indicated by eduction, job success or wealth. Certainly, people who "learned" entirely within a TV/monitor environment will process visual input differently from those with personal experience or mixed media learning. This has nothing to do with "intelligence" but can indicate "interpretive blinders" as DWR mentions. For example, when performing a simple rope effect like "Shoelace" consider that a given spectator may never have 1) ever seen a live magic effect, 2) ever tied a knot, 3) ever tied a shoelace As an experiment a couple of years ago I set up a frame like a TV screen and performed some effects behind it, and some not. The memory of the effects and impact was greater when "on TV' than not, and actions "outside the frame" were invisible. I could get eye contact when looking through the frame but some refused eye contact when I was "live." So, just another way to make an effect "stronger" -- create an artificial environment common to the observer. not sure about Mentalism effects. Something to think about. Recall the discussion about using microphones. Same principle perhaps.
"the more one pretends at magic, the more awe and wonder will be found in real life." Arnold Furst

Just FYI, in my original version of the Chair Test in my first booklet Pre-Thoughts, there was no covers, the numbers were simply on the back and the bottom of the Chairs. It was originally meant as a simple chair test that one could do if in a bind and hand no props with them.
WHen it went to Syzygy, it then was converted to slip covers on the chairs to give some eye Candy to the set.
