I'm making a film that was inspired by a hypnotist performance. It mixes hallucinations and demonic apparitions.
I'm known to the Café - I usually hang out in the "Cellar" portion of the forum! You can find out more about the film here - and see the work I did for The Walking Dead on my short explainer film: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bad-acid/x/660020 |

So you intend to make the job of working hypnotists even tougher?
Thank you.

Not really. It's a fictional story.

Yea no. It will make the job much tougher the more nonsense is put out there about demons and hypnosis and such.

Just as Dexter made the job of forensic scientists difficult or Breaking Bad made the job of science teachers difficult or Brooklyn 99 makes the job of police more difficult? I would like to credit an audience with some imagination and intelligence.

Bertoneski, Good job on the project however you may be coming at Danny's response the wrong way. He may not have explained the situation correctly and this is no fault of yours. If you are not a performing hypnotist you may not actually know about the stigma many groups put onto hypnosis as a form of devil worship, mind control or generally bad stuff.
This mostly comes from religious nuts but it has actually penetrated the general population too in many areas. People do believe what they see on tv and in the movies and even in the newspaper even if it is complete bull manure. This stigma was originally created through main stream movies, radio programs, and books like: Svengali, The Shadow and others. This stigma is of course mostly unfounded but there have been reports over the years of hypnotists being rapists and such. I highly doubt the validity of hypnosis allowing rape to happen however I do know people are people and they will do stupid, stupid things. While I applaud your project and agree you have the right to do anything you so choose, If your movie went mainstream Danny would be very correct in his assesment. Recently I performed at a fair and had a born again christian approach me after the show and tear me a new one. This has actually happened more than once. People are both smarter and dumber than we could ever imagine all at the same time. JEsse

Hi Jesse - I understand there may be many preconcieved ideas regarding hypnotists / hypnotism and I certainly don't want to make anybody's job any more difficult than it is. I think most people in the UK associate hypnotism with weight loss and stopping smoking than Svengali and mind control - unless perhaps if they have seen a stage show. Our local doctor's surgery carries information on theraputic hypnotism. My small film with it's very limited intended distribution is highly unlikely to do your profession any harm - as the title of the film suggests it's the drug and the folklore that goes with that, that people are likely to focus on.

It is the folklore that MAKES THE JOB TOUGH.
I will ask you this. What is your background in hypnosis or anything related to it?

After Danny Boyle's film a few years ago was released in the UK I met a couple of people who thought I could control their minds and were horrified when they found out I was a hypnotist. Its always been that way - some people are curious and interested while others are afraid. They also perceive a stage hypnotist differently from a therapist. In general the public see stage hypnotists as "more powerful" which is why therapists line up to discredit them. |

I would not use the strong phrase "you are completely wrong", but overall I also have to say from my experience, that whenever I tell people that I am a hypnotist, they are intrigued but scared at the same time. And they generally do not associate it with smoking or weight loss or migraine but with making people eat lemons and forget their names or the number 7. In short: They think you can control their minds agains their will because of the shows they watch on TV.
But I do not necessarily see why this makes the work of a hypnotherapist more difficult. I usually explain to my clients what to expect from real hypnosis and the difference to show-hypnosis and never had a problem with it. |
