Is it just me
A neighbor wanted some CNC work done. I gave him a sample of a slot he wanted cut at 2 inches by three quarters. So I cut the slot exactly at 2.00 by 0.75 and he said it was Way Too Big. >>>> Before I go further, This company makes kitchens for a living, professionally, with a business license and everything, in an industrial building no less.... so you figure he could use a ruler, right? Nope. I finally asked him to show me exactly how he measured this-here opening... so he took 3 quarters from his pocket - put them together and said - this is three quarters. I KID YOU NOT

That's really funny!! You should have re-set the quarters side by side and said, "Oh, I thought you meant this way."

That is nothing, I ask a professional wood craftsman to cut me a board 24" X 16" square, so he cut the board and handed me a 16" x 16" square piece of board.
English is a really tough language isn't it. Then this just append at a lumber yard. I want a 2 X 4 cut into 24" square lengths. He did not know what I meant by square. I thought having square corners was common knowledge. |

I got a kick out of reading that....
You should drop the word square from your instructions as it is confusing. If you came to me and you were to tell me that you wanted a board cut 24" x 16" square I'd have to ask you if it was a April fools joke because that does not make sense since any object that is 24" x 16" would not be square but rather a rectangle. However if you want precise 90 degree cuts or square corners and edges then that is what you should ask for and not a board 24" x 16" "square". As for a 2x4 that is 24 inches square, you would need a lumber stretcher to accomplish that. Again, you'd need to ask for a 2x4 cut into 24" lengths, with "square cuts" and not square lengths. It's not the length that is square but rather the cut that is square. The reason he didn't know what you meant by "square" is because it is usually assumed that if someone wants something cut, it will be cut off at a square, 90 degrees unless another particular angle is specified. It's really not so much an English language problem as it is a phrasing problem and it's just not the way that craftsmen speak about cuts and dimensions. I hope this helps. |

Funny story. I guess if he had asked for two inches and a half it would have involved a fifty-cent piece.

Guy at a lumber yard: I want some 2x4's.
Lumber salesman: How long do you want them? Guy again: Oh, a long time. I'm building a house.

A magician friend worked in a cabinet factory where they built custom kitchens to order by a set of plans designed by their engineering department. He said there were about 30 people there and only he and one other person could read a tape measure.
